and welcome to the Charlotte Chess Club website. On this page, which is
continuously updated, we will report a weekly synopsis of the previous
meeting to include current standings, annotated games, and other interesting
anecdotes for your reading, viewing, and listening pleasure. We welcome

Tapia Uses "Swiss Gambit";
Achieves Master Title With 2550+ Performance Rating at World Open!

PA 7-6-04: CCC Favorite
Son, three time NC Scholastic Champion Daniel "Johnny" Tapia
(2159)represented
the state of North Carolina in quite an extraordinary fashion after he
took a half point Bye in Rd:1. He then realed off wins against IM Jay Bonin
(2405), IM Mark Ginsberg (2435)
and WGM Keteva Arakhamia- Grant (2452) before slipping against GM Alexander
Ivanov (2623). Next, he Drew IM Nikolai Andrianov (2433), Lost to GM Pavel
Blatny (2547) defeated Bruce Leverett (2337) and finally Drew FM Lev Milman
(2472) to score 5.5 and take home Top
Under 2300 honors and $2,300! The average
rating of his opponents was 2463! His
performance rating was a whopping 2556!
And, according to the USCF Rating Calculator his new rating will be 2234!
This should move him to the "Top 10" for 18 year olds in the Nation. Wow!!
Congratulations Daniel. Keep up the great work!!
Honorable mention goes to Expert Chris "the Babe"
Mabe
(2069) who did not lose a single game, including a final round pawn down
Draw versus a 2199, and finished =8th-18th in the Under 2200 Section with
6.5
winning
$2,000.
His performance rating was 2374
and his new rating should be 2124!

as McCartney Upsets Newton in Top; Griffin Leads "B"; Ozherelyev "C"; Katz,
Xin, Hashemloo Lower Section of Wendy's LVII
Charlotte,
NC 7-14-04: A rather light turnout of 24
of the most amicable chessplayers in the Metrolina area forgot
all about baseball
and joyfully participated in Rd:4 of Wendy's LVII.
In the Top Section, ending a record streak of 43
consecutive encounters in CCC competition without losing a single game!,
the CCC's #1 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, 2004 NC Invitational Champion
NM Frankie "Not-on" Newton (2264)
was outflanked by Expert Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2024)(See
Game 0405) but still shares the lead with 2.5
with
Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (1992) who split the point with
Expert
Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2069).
Meanwhile, Expert Todd "Flower Power" Trower (2036) hung
tough against NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2026) while the good
Reverend Bernard "King" Baker(1820)
defeated "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1666). In
the "B" Section, David "the Bear" Griffin (1675)
outplayed Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1665) to lead with 2.5.
In addition, Walter Overman (1661) handled Kevin "Spacey" Huang
(1645). In the "C" Section, Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev
(1594) didn't even bother to show up but still leads with 2-0.
Meanwhile, Jon "the Mad Siberian" Grechka (1406) executed
a rather clever Draw against Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1546). In
the Lower Section, Hassan "HH" Hashemloo, Samuel "Reshevsky"
Xin
and Marty "Fritz" Katz each lead with 3
points.
Other Lower Section winners were: Chang Sun and Richard
Towell.

fierce competitors from North and South Carolina
arrived at the Smokehouse with a vengeance! In the Top Section,
Rd:1
upsets took their toll as SC Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2061) fell to

Pealer
(1992), NM Leland "El-Slowpoke" Fuerstman (2026) overspent his clock versus
Brian "Tiger" Woods (1678) and Patrick "Flanker" McCartney
(2024) was for the second time tripped up by 15 year old "Mean"
Matthew
Green (1659) (See Game 0406)
. Meanwhile,

"Chessninja"
Trower
(2036) dispatched of the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1820), Brian
"Tiger" Woods (1678) and finally Drew with Chris "the Babe" Mabe
(2069) to capture clear 1st Place with 2.5-.5
and pocket $100.
Equal 2nd-5th were Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2061), Chris
"the Babe" Mabe (2069), Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (1997)
and James "Big" MacDougall (1829) each with 2-1
winning $12.50.
In the Lower Section, Walter
"Mitty"

(1661) registered wins against Paul Copeland (1191), Samual Xin (1076)
and Jeff McAdams (1516) to take clear 1st Place with

and take home $100.
Equal 2nd-5th were Suliman Mason, Solomon Mason, Samuel
