NEWS & VIEWS 8-4-05
Rangarajan, Newton Lead Top; Katz "B"; Holmes, Gatlin "C";
Fan Lower
Section of Wendy's LXVIII
Charlotte, NC 8-3-05:
A
healthy turnout of 34 of the greater
Charlotte area's most creative calculators converged upon this factory
where chess champions are stamped out more commonly known as
Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:4
of Wendy's LXVIII. In the Top Section,
the CCC's #1 player and North Carolina's
offically highest rated player SM Karthik
"Rajah" Rangarajan (2468) requested and
was granted a half point Bye. Meanwhile, the CCC's #2 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, NM Frankie
"Neutrino" Newton
(2299) AKA
"the Gladiator" defended handily against Patrick
"Fabio" McCartney (1989) and with his victory caught the leader, each
now with 3-1.
In addition, Expert Shawn
"Arlo" Pealer (2048) pressed
home a B vs N ending against Gary "Sandbagger" Branton (1800), NM Leland "Perro-Grande" Fuerstman (2003) initiated Vyacheslav
Fedko (Unr), the good Reverend Bernard
"King" Baker (1868) used
kryptonite on mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1808) and 15 year old
rising star Laura "Karate Kid"
Lee (1777) checkmated Expert Michael "See You Are; See You Are
You" Curcuru (2107). In the "B" Section,
local folk hero Marty "Fritz"
Katz (1708)
requested and was granted a half point Bye and now leads
with 2.5-1.5.
Meanwhile, Ken "the not so
Terrible" Ivens (1736)
prevailed in a Q and 6 Pawns versus Q and 0 Pawns ending against
Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1692), Jackie "Bman" Ryan (1739) squeaked by 10 year old
phenom Joshua "Moo" Mu (1674), Brian
"Tiger" Woods (1688) teed off
on "Sponge" Bob Moore (1700), Amelia
"Wheels" Wheeless (1640)
expatriated Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1526) and Donald "Trump" Hofer (1627) fired Colette "Wheels"
Wheeless (1587). In the "C" Section,
Keith "Sherlock" Holmes (1420) made peace with Dyrus "What is it good for" Wuor (Unr) as did likewise Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1458) with Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1428) to each now lead with
2.5-1.5.
In addition, Octavius "0-0" Obey (1498) upset David "Haircut"
Forehand (1608). In the Lower Section, Jim Fan (1397) split the point with Fran "Arnie" Palmer (909) to lead with 3-1. Other Lower Section winners were: Chang "Moon" Sun, Chris Kohlhepp and Amanda Braband. All results may be observed on the "Current Crosstable E-mail

Curcuru, Fuerstman Share
Top Honors; Abdelkefi, McAdams, Singleton, Wheeless
=1st-4th in Lower Section of Bertucci's I
Charlotte NC 7-16-05: A grand total of 23 chessplayers from hither and
yon travelled to the Queen City in order to participate in Bertucci's I. (Believe
it or not, Bertucci's Italian Restaurant
is actually better than Billy's! The simi-private
playing area was spacious and well lighted, the traditional Italian
cuisine was delicious, reasonably priced and far more than I could eat,
and the servers and management made us feel very welcome.) In the Top Section,
returning to CCC
competition, with 3 seconds left, Expert Michael "See You Are; See You Are
You" Curcuru (2114)
miraculously survived a Rd:1
debacle Drawing 10 year old phenom Joshua
"Moo" Mu
(1677) before defeating Dan "Ski" Andrzejewski (1760) in Rd:2 and Expert Chris "the Babe"
Mabe (2176) in Rd:3 to score 2.5-.5 and
share =1st-2nd Place with NM Leland "Perro-Grande" Fuerstman (2003) who dispatched of
Tom Hales (1646) in Rd:1,
yielded a Draw to Randy
"Wheels" Wheeless (1707) in Rd:2 and defeated Joshua
"Moo" Mu (1677) in Rd:3 each
winning $80. In the Lower
Section, =1st-4th were Kaled "the Alphabet" Abdelkefi (1560), Jeff "Chief" McAdams (1520), Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1477) and Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1587) each
scoring 2.5-.5
and winning $40.
