Newton Leads Top; Waddell, Overman, Eddleman "B"; Katz, Eadie, Whittington "C"; Nichols Lower Section of Wendy's LIX - Free Food Again Next Week !! Charlotte,
NC 9-8-04: A favorable turnout of

the Southern Piedmont area's most ambitious competitors who were not inundated
by "Francis" braved the torrents and navigated
to this chess marina more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate
in Rd:2 of Wendy's LIX.  In
the Top Section, the CCC's #2 player, current NC Invitational
Champion NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton (2264) dispatched of
NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2000) in short order to lead with
2-0.
Meanwhile, the CCC's new #1 player, FM Karthik "Rajah" Rangarajan
(2591p) defended successfully
against Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2088), after approximately 90 moves Patrick
"Flanker" McCartney (2024)  resorted
to using kryptonite on Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1836), "George C." Scott
Baldwin (1759) went to the wire with the good Reverend Bernard "King"
Baker (1820) and after a time trouble blunder, Shawn "Arlo" Pealer
(2030)
(who
"unofficially" made Expert for the first time in his career!)
upset NM Elect Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2252) (See
Game 0423).  In
the "B" Section, though he got rained out, Bobby "Duck" Waddell
(1763) still maintains a share of the lead at 1.5-.5
with Walter "Mitty" Overman (1661) who bested Bob "Roger"
Moore (1700) and Jesse "James" Eddleman (1645) who busted
Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1571). In the "C" Section, leading
with 2-0, Marty "Fritz"
Katz
(1521) debunked Kert "Oracle" Edward (1552), Dave "Ameen"
Eadie
(1540) outlasted Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1459) and "Dr."
Phil Whittington
(1427)
exhausted the ammo of Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1506). In the Lower
Section, Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1133) defeated Joe Shirlen
(1019) to lead with 2-0. Other Lower
Section
winners were: Ilgin "the Mad Turk" Birsan and Stephen
Wang. All results may be observed on the
"Current
Crosstable." Next Smokehouse Saturday, September
18.

Rangarajan, Tapia Share Top Honors in Green Market

NC 9-11-04: A cadre of 16
elite members of the CCC Honor Guard first
paused for a moment of silence to remember our fellow Americans who lost
their lives in the Twin Towers exactly 3 years ago, and then participated
in the Green Market Championship. This one section
open-air event, sponsored by Crown Communications,
coincided with the Saturday Green Market with it's
fresh vegetables, fruits, coffee, handy crafts, jewelry, etc. All players
enjoyed "free" coffee, bottled water, fresh baked muffins and giant
cookies from Reid's Fine Foods!
Save for a lively discussion with management about the DOGS in the playing
area?!? (a City Ordinance prohibits animals from civic gatherings)
this was a most enjoyable tournament for all.  Sharing

Honors
with 3-0 were SM Karthik

(Unr) who registered wins over "Dr." Phil Whittington (1470), Walter
"Mitty" Overman (1473) and Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1858) and NM Daniel
"Johnny" Tapia (1753) who defeated Joshua "Moo" Mu (1340), the
good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1666) and NM Leland "Premier Hombre"
Fuerstman (2078). Each pocketed $75.

grand total of 17 of
the Metrolina area's most competent competitors
participated in  Smokehouse
LIV.
In the Top Section, welcome addition to the CCC, 24 year
old FIDE Master Karthik "Rajah" Rangarajan (FIDE2306)
reported victories over Ken "the Terrible" Ivens (1629), Shawn "Arlo" Pealer
(1992) and NM Justin "Dog" Daniel (2195) to take clear 1st Place
with 3-0
and pocket $100.
Rangarajan's
current USCF performance rating is 2557!
Equal 2nd-4th were NM Justin "Dog" Daniel, Ken
"the Terrible" Ivens and Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev(who
upset LF in Rd:1) each with 2-1
winning $17.  In
the Lower Section, Kert "Oracle" Edward (1552)
bested Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1506) and Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (1076) before
splitting the point with John "the Mad Siberian" Grechka
(1365) who prevailed over Colette Wheeless (1415) and Laurin Keller (1484).
Each scored 2.5-.5
and pocketed $45.
