Newton Reigns Supreme in Top; Eberhardinger Middle; Gatlin Lower Section of Wendy's XXXI - Parity Keeps Scores Low?!
Charlotte, NC 1-16-02: A grand total of 57 of the most creative thinkers of the Piedmont area participated in Wendy's XXXI. In the Top Section, for a club record 18th time, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2233) outdistanced the field by 1 and 1/2 points with a final round win over David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1853) to finish clear 1st Place with 4-1. Clear 2nd Place with 2.5-2.5 was NM Daniel "Schlecter" Liu (2000) who for a CCC record 3rd time drew 5 consecutive games! which included his Rd:5 draw versus NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2098). Also, in the Top Section, NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2012) once again outflanked the French Defense of Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1886)(See Game 0195)  while 15 year old phenom, soon to be Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1992) broke out the kryptonite for mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1748) (See Game 0202) . In the Middle Section, (since Professor Michael Lipkin's results included two match games versus Paul "Big Bertha" Calloway), "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger's (1609)  final round win over Danesh "Shah" Dadgar (1568) boosted him to clear 1st Place with 2.5-.5? Also, in the Middle Section, David "Richman" Richards (1615) conducted a hostile takeover of  "CEO" Mike Isner (1515), Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1660) used his raygun on Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1464) and Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1637) beat up on Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1438). In the Lower Section, though he missed the final round, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin's (1253) score of 3-1 was good enough for clear 1st Place? Other Lower Section winners were:  Deneil "Slick" Brazell, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, Copeland "Copie" Blackwell, Jim "Sticks" Ulaky, KevinBlackwell, Don "Cards" Norwood, Brandy "Jersey Mikes" Chaffee and newcomer Viktor Ozhrelyev. All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable." And, while you're at it, visit the "new" CCC Message Board www.charlottechess.com/wwwboard and speak to us!! For his superior effort, Tapia pocketed $100. Equal 2nd-3rd with 2-1 were NM Jurjevich and Newsom each winning $25.
