    Greetings from Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, Earth to everyone out there in cyberia, and welcome to the Charlotte Chess Club website. We have finally entered the ultra modern age of instant communication. In this column, which is updated every Thursday, we will strive to report a weekly synopsis of the previous meeting to include current standings, annotated games, and other interesting anecdotes for your reading, viewing, and listening pleasure. Our goal is to eventually provide our members with a "realtime" site which will instantly produce current information about chess with the click of a mouse! Newton Takes Early Lead in Top Amid Record Breaking Crowd!
Charlotte, NC 1-30-02: An individual round record of 44 of the most competent calculators in the county participated in Rd:2 of Wendy's XXXIIIn the Top Section, with only seconds left on his clock, CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2233) emerged victorious over Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1886) to lead with 1.5-.5. Meanwhile, NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2098) upset CCC's Favorite Son, 18 year old phenom, Expert Justin "Dog" Daniel (2184), Expert Gary "the nuisance" Newsom (2013) outlasted David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1853), 15 year old phenom and soon to be Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1992) split the point with NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2024) and Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1767) did likewise with NM Daniel "Schlecter" Liu (2000). In the Cruiserweight Division, Clarke "Superman" Brosi (1748) neutralized the raygun of Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1660) to lead with 2-0. In the Middle Section now with 2 points, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1637) beat down Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1464) while "CEO" Mike Isner (1515) kept pace with a nice win over David "Richman" Richards (1615). In addition, Deneil "Slick" Brazell (1492) handled Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup (1471), Slobodan Sinanovic (1617) defeated Brandon "Starr" Brown (1511) and Danesh "Shah" Dadgar (1568) beat Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1600). In the Lower Section, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin, Nathaniel "Techdude" Eerenberg, Ankit Jivan and Clyde Plyler are tied for the lead with 2-0. Other Lower Section winners were: Jim "Sticks" Ulaky, Todd Essex, Bernard Baker, Viktor Ozhrelyev, Palmer Blackshear, Marat Kocharyan and Robert Broadbent. Tapia Sweeps Top; Keller Lower Section of Smokehouse XXIII 

Charlotte, NC 1-19-02: Twenty-one weekend warriors participated in Smokehouse XXIII. In the Top Section, 15 year old phenom, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1992) substantiated his claim to the Expert ranks by registering a perfect 3-0 with wins over Mike Eberhardinger (1609), NM Joseph Jurjevich (2122) and Gary Newsom (2013) respectively. For his superior effort, Tapia pocketed $100. Equal 2nd-3rd with 2-1 were NM Jurjevich and Newsom each winning $25. The Lower Section was dominated by Laurin Keller (1449) (and his trainer)from Greensboro who turned in a perfect 3-0 and won $100.
