    Greetings from Charlotte N.C, USA, Earth to everyone out there in cyberspace, and welcome to the Charlotte Chess Club website. We have finally entered the ultra modern age of instant communication. In this column, which is updated every Thursday, we will strive to report a weekly synopsis of the previous meeting to include current standings, annotated games, and other interesting anecdotes for your reading, viewing, and listening pleasure. Our goal is to eventually provide our members with a "realtime" site which will instantly produce current information about chess with the click of a mouse! We welcome your comments and contributions

Wendy's XIX Begins; Upsets Abound

Thirty-two chess energumens forwent watching the ALC Playoffs and instead sought to become champions themselves by competing in Rd:1 of Wendy's XIX. In the Top Section, top seed [NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2236) was a no show] NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2151) was upset by NM Leland Fuerstman (2015) for the second time in as many weeks! (See Game 0143) Meanwhile, CCC Favorite Son, 16 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2122) handily defeated Patrick McCartney (1887) while Tom Waymouth (1880) perpetrated yet another upset victory; this time over NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2023). In the Cruiserweight Division, Jon "Infinity's End & Cigar's Etc" Pietras (1779) has adjourned a R&P ending against CCC IO "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1633). In the Middle Section, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1641) took out Carl McKern (1510) while Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1421) (See Game 0144)  and David Roman (1333) upset David Mangis (1524) and Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1400) respectively.  Also, in the Middle Section, D. Paul Jenkins (1542) has adjourned with "CEO" Mike Isner (1400). In the Lower Section, wins were registered by Daryl "Flash" Gordon (See Game 0142), Derek Smith, Alphonse Ashamalla, Freddie Perdue, Randy Hunter, Eric Melton and Darrell "Kobe" Spencer. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."

Pohl Perfect in Top; DeBell and Tapia Share Honors in Middle Section of Smokehouse VIII

Thirteen weekend warriors participated in Smokehouse VIII on Saturday, September 30. In the Top Section SM Klaus Pohl (2210) from Greenville, S.C. asserted his superiority by clicking off successive wins against Paul Calloway (1675), NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2236) and Patrick McCartney (1900) to take clear First Place and collect $80. Equal 2nd-5th were NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II, Patrick McCartney and Jon Pietras each winning $13.33.  In the Lower Section, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1421) struck again with wins over Mike Lipkin (1540) and Sam Christopher (1050) and a Rd:2 Draw against Jerome "BigGuy" DeBell (1540).  DeBell defeated Sam Christopher (1050) and Don Norwood (800). Each took home $37.50. Fuerstman directed.
