CCC NEWS &VIEWS 9-14-00
By NM Leland Fuerstman

Thirteen Perfect Scores After Rd:1; Only 4 After Rd:2!

A rather light turnout of only 29 (I guess the "Survivors" is back on) of the Greater Charlotte area's most interesting characters , some of whom are actually good chess players, converged upon our arena of mental jousting more commonly known as Wendy's in order to "survive" Rd:2 of Wendy's XVIII. Draws, losses and no-shows all contributed to the sharp reduction in perfect scores. (The CCC now pays a $100 Bonus to any player who scores 5-0!) In the Top Section, NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2236) barely made the time control after a wild piece sac by NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) the game resulting in Draw.  (See Game 0135)  Meanwhile, David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1866) who holds an edge in his second adjournment versus NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2151) handily defeated Patrick McCartney (1948)  (See Game 0136) while returning Ex-Expert Tom Waymouth (1880) did the same to NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2151).  In addition, Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc" Pietras (1789) rolled up and smoked Gregory "the mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1718).  In the Cruiserweight Division, Paul Lucas Drew with CCC I.O. "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1636).  In the Middle Section, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1408) handled "CEO" Mike Isner (1437), Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1617) took care of David Mangis (1540) and Thomas "Hitman" Hayes (1475) finally stopped the winning streak of Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1332).  In the Lower Section, AnthonySmith (1254) and probably Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1345) lead with 2-0 after wins over Stephen Welt (Unr) and Derek Smith (1150) respectively. Other Lower Section winners were: Darrell "Kobe" Spencer, Lee "R&Bman" Richardson, Brandon Brown and Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."All welcome new CCC member Randy Hunter.

Newton, McCartney Share Smokehouse VII Title; Tapia Perfect in Lower Section

Twenty of the most prodigious barbeque eatin' chessplayers in the area (and beyond) competed in Smokehouse VII.  In the Top Section, NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2236) defeated Robert Spurrier (1934) and Ken Baxter (1968) before agreeing to a "quick" Draw with Patrick McCartney (1948) who had defeated Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1480) and Expert Justin Daniel (2070).  Each scored 2.5-.5 and collected $75. In the Lower Section, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1332) registered a perfect score and collected $100 with wins over Thomas "Hitman" Hayes (1475), Stephen Welt (Unr) and Robert Caldwell (880).  Equal 2nd thru 6th were Thomas Hayes, Lauren Keller, Jim Ulaky, Nick Spurrier and Robert Caldwell each winning $10. Fuerstman directed.
