CCC NEWS &VIEWS 9-21-00
By NM Leland Fuerstman

Jaap 3-0! in Top, Millsaps 3-0! in Middle, Gordon 3-0! in Lower Section of Wendy's XVIII

And then there were three! A rather paltry turnout of only 27 of the Metrolina area's most creative thinkers converged upon our sacred chess laboratory more commonly known as Wendy's on Wednesday evening in order to compete in Rd:3 of Wendy's XVIII. In the Top Section, after finally converting to a win his Rd:1 adjournment versus NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2151), David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1866) lived up to his moniker by sacrificing a piece against NM Leland Fuerstman (2013) and ultimately upsetting our good club President to lead the section with 3-0!  (See Game 0137) (His first career win over Fuerstman) Also, in the Top Section, NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2236) just got by Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc" Pietras (1789) while NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2151) handled Patrick McCartney (1948).  In the Middle Section, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1613) prevailed over Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1420) to survive with the only perfect score in the section while Paul Jenkins (1553) defeated "CEO" Mike Isner (1400) and David Mangis (1540) handled Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1332). In the Lower Section, Daryl "Flash" Gordon's (1267) win over Anthony Smith (1213) leaves him with the only perfect score in the section. (The CCC now pays a $100 bonus for 5-0). Other Lower Section winners were:  Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, Brandon Brown, Timothy Ruffin, Sam Christopher, Ankit Jivan and Joe Ulaky. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."

Newton, McCartney Share Smokehouse VII Title; Tapia Perfect in Lower Section

Twenty of the most prodigious barbeque eatin' chessplayers in the area (and beyond) competed in Smokehouse VII.  In the Top Section, NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2236) defeated Robert Spurrier (1934) and Ken Baxter (1968) before agreeing to a "quick" Draw with Patrick McCartney (1948) who had defeated Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1480) and Expert Justin Daniel (2070).  Each scored 2.5-.5 and collected $75. In the Lower Section, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1332) registered a perfect score and collected $100 with wins over Thomas "Hitman" Hayes (1475), Stephen Welt (Unr) and Robert Caldwell (880).  Equal 2nd thru 6th were Thomas Hayes, Lauren Keller, Jim Ulaky, Nick Spurrier and Robert Caldwell each winning $10. Fuerstman directed.
