Perfect Scores Vanish! Bonus Doubles!! Newton Takes Commanding Lead in Top

Thirty-four of the greater Charlotte area's most gifted and talented thinkers forwent "watching" athletes compete in the "2000 Olympics" and instead chose, themselves, to actively compete in Rd:4 of Wendy's XVIII.   In the Top Section, leader David "Kamikaze" Jaap's (1866) winning streak came to an abrupt halt at the hands of NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2236) who now leads with 3.5-.5. (NOTE: Because the $100 Bonus for 5-0 went unclaimed, the CCC will offer a $200 Bonus in Wendy's XIX!) Meanwhile, NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2151) has adjourned a Pawn down versus NM Leland Fuerstman (2015).  Also, in the Top Section, Patrick McCartney (1900) upset NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) while Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc" Pietras (1777) registered a win after a tactical melee against Tom Waymouth (1880). (See Game 0139)  In the Cruiserweight Division, Gregory "the Mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1722) was upset by Paul Jenkins (1562).  In the Middle Section, leader Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1622) was finally turned back by Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1421).(Tapia's first published rating in the June 2000 USCF Rating Supplement was 991. Now, ninety days later, he has gained 430 points!). Also, in the Middle Section, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1500) took out Paul Lucas (1600) while Thomas "Hitman" Hayes (1483) notched the point against David Mangis (1540). In the Lower Section, all hopes for a perfect score were dashed as Daryl "Flashinthepan" Gordon (1267) succumbed to the tactics of Brandon Brown (1304).(See Game 0138) Other Top Section winners were: Derek Smith (1238) (who upset Jerome "BIG GUY" DeBell (1540), Lee "R&Bman" Richardson,Ankit Jivan, Joe Ulaky and Freddy Purdue. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." See ya' Saturday at Smokehouse VIII. LF

Pohl Perfect in Top; DeBell and Tapia Share Honors in Middle Section of Smokehouse XIII

Thirteen weekend warriors participated in Smokehouse VIII on Saturday, September 30. In the Top Section SM Klaus Pohl (2210) from Greenville, S.C. asserted his superiority by clicking off successive wins against Paul Calloway (1675), NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2236) and Patrick McCartney (1900) to take clear First Place and collect $80. Equal 2nd-5th were NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II, Patrick McCartney and Jon Pietras each winning $13.33.  In the Lower Section, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1421) struck again with wins over Mike Lipkin (1540) and Sam Christopher (1050) and a Rd:2 Draw against Jerome "BigGuy" DeBell (1540).  DeBell defeated Sam Christopher (1050) and Don Norwood (800). Each took home $37.50. Fuerstman directed.
