CCC NEWS &VIEWS 10-26-00
By NM Leland Fuerstman

Four Tied for Lead in Top; Millsaps Perfect in Middle; Ashamalla & D. Smith in Lower Section of Wendy's XIX

Thirty-five of the CCC's most avid competitors chose not to witness four hours of  malicious violence (more commonly known as the World Series) and instead opted for the pugilistic confrontation of the chessboard. In the Top Section, co-leader NM Leland Fuerstman (2018) was upended by the crafty play of NM Frankie "the Neutron Bomb" Newton (2220). Meanwhile, NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2141) bested David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1820) while CCC Favorite Son 16 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2122) remained idle but still keeps pace with the leaders with 1.5 after Rd:3. In addition, NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2023) split the point with Patrick McCartney (1900).  In the Cruiserweight Division, Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc" Pietras (1772) defeated David "the Bear" Griffin (1662).  In the Middle Section, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1641) upstaged CCC I.O. "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1645) to remain perfect.  Also, in the Middle Section, D. Paul Jenkins (1562) beat David Mangis (1496), Thomas "Hitman" Hayes (1471) took out CEO "Iron Mike" Isner (1407), Don Hofer (1500) upset shuttleman Paul Calloway (1666), Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1428) drew with visitor from Chicago Robert Eaman (1471) and upstart Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1422) has adjourned with Jerome "BigGuy" DeBell (1490). In the Lower Section, Derek Smith (1238) and Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1278) defeated David Roman (1333) and Brandon Brown (1295) respectively to maintain perfect 3-0 scores. Other Lower Section winners were: Daryl Gordon, Eric Melton, Michael "You know you make me wanna" Shoup, Ankit Jivan and Frank Mu. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."
(Good luck to all CCC members at the North Carolina Championships this weekend...just win, Baby!! LF)

Pohl Perfect in Top; DeBell and Tapia Share Honors in Middle Section of Smokehouse VIII

Thirteen weekend warriors participated in Smokehouse VIII on Saturday, September 30. In the Top Section SM Klaus Pohl (2210) from Greenville, S.C. asserted his superiority by clicking off successive wins against Paul Calloway (1675), NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2236) and Patrick McCartney (1900) to take clear First Place and collect $80. Equal 2nd-5th were NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II, Patrick McCartney and Jon Pietras each winning $13.33.  In the Lower Section, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1421) struck again with wins over Mike Lipkin (1540) and Sam Christopher (1050) and a Rd:2 Draw against Jerome "BigGuy" DeBell (1540).  DeBell defeated Sam Christopher (1050) and Don Norwood (800). Each took home $37.50. Fuerstman directed.
