NEWS & VIEWS 12-1-05
Wendy's
LXXII Begins; (7:30 pm!)
Charlotte, NC 11-30-05:
A
reasonably strong turnout of 34 of the Metrolina
area's most agressive competitors converged upon this multi-national
convention of mental jousters more
commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:1 of Wendy's LXXII. In
the Top Section, the
CCC's #2 player, the pride of Crouse, NC NM Frankie "Neutrino" Newton (2294) AKA the Gladiator
demonstrated his superiority over 2005
NC Class "B" Champion
Jonathan "the Enforcer" Munnell (1900)
(who just finished =1st-5th in the U1800 Section at the National Chess Congress in Philadelphia winning $60,000!)
to grab a share of the lead with NM Leland
"Perro Grande" Fuerstman
(2037) who survived a tough battle against 2005 NC Class "A" Champion Gary
"Sandbagger" Branton (1880) (See Game 0530) and Michael
"Jordan" Kliber (1919) who
clobbered Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1791) each with 1-0. In
addition, Team Davidson member Tim "I just increased my" Rankin (1849) split the point with
Expert Gary "the Nuisance" Newsom (2009) as did Expert Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (2000) with rising star Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1800). In the "B" Section, student Amelia "Wheels" Wheeless (1675) defeated Coach Keith
"Sherlock" Holmes (1665) to share the lead with 10 year old phenom Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (1619) who dismembered Octavius
"0-0" Obey (1485) each with 1-0.
Meanwhile, Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1686) made peace with Donald "Trump" Hofer (1560). In the "C" Section, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1515) played a nice horn
riff for Randy Hight (1510) while Drexall
"Frank" Shorter (1518) outran
Tony "the Tiger" Hicks (1430) and Winfred
"Guns" Gatlin (1451) blew away
Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1398) to each lead with 1-0. In
addition, Viktor "the Mad
Russian" Ozherelyev (1562)
split the point with Colette
"Wheels" Wheeless (1553). In
the Lower Section, wins were reported by Duncan "Doughnuts" McLaughlin, Doyle W. Dewbre III, Thomas "Played his" Harp and Dave Peter. All
results may be observed on the "Current
