NEWS &VIEWS 2-20-03
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Wendy's XLIII Commences
Charlotte,
NC 2-19-03: A
particularly strong turnout of 40 of the Metrolina
area's most creative cogitators converged upon our sacred temple
of "ruminators" more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate
in
Rd:1 of Wendy's XLIII. In the Top Section, the
CCC's
#1 active player, current NC State Champion NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton
(2246) outmaneuvered NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000), NM
John
"NightTrain" Lane (2080) outlasted Jackie "B" Ryan (1876), NM Leland
"El-Duce" Fuerstman (2033) got his butt kicked in the opening, was
outplayed in the middlegame, and
begged for a draw in the ending before mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi
(1870) blundered a rook on move 33 (See Game
0287), and the pride of Man-ha-en, 17 year old
tyro Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1828) upset Patrick "Flanker"
McCartney (2033). In
the Middle Section, Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan
(1511) used his ".44" on David "the Bear" Griffin (1694), Viktor
"the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1600) vanquished Danesh Dadger (1591),
Frank
"Chessman" Johnson (1520) fired "CEO" Mike Isner (1566),
Josh
Willen (1670) handled David "RichMan" Richards (1628), the good Reverend
Bernard
"King" Baker (1600) schooled Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1439)
and Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1447) bested Clyde Plyler (1396).
To view Gatlin's upset of Paul Lucas (See Game
0288). In the Lower Section, wins were
reported by 7 year old phenom
Joshua "Moo" Mu, Michael
"the Savage" Savage,
Brandy Johnson, Laura Lee, Daryl
"Wilkes" Booth,
Michael "Keith" Richards, Tony
Hicks, Kevin Blackwell and
Ankit "Butch" Jivan.

Smokehouse XXXVI
Charlotte,
NC 2-22-02: Almost three
complete sections of a total of 29
chessplayers from various origins participated
in Smokehouse XXXVI. In the Top Section,
which was noticably absent of many of Charlotte's top players, (some
speculated that the fear of losing was the reason),NM
Jairo
Moreira (2339) ran off consecutive wins against Chris "the Babe" Mabe
(1975), Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2048) and NM Joseph Jurjevich (2158)
to score a perfect 3-0
and take home $100.
Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1 were NM Joseph Jurjevich, Keith
Eubanks, Patrick McCartney and Chris Mabe (See
Game 0289) each winning $12.50.
In order to view NM Fuerstman's Rd:1 game versus Brosi (See
Game 0290) In the Middle
Section, perfect 3-0's
were reported by two players. The
good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1600) registered wins
against Matthew Walker (1522), Mike Isner (1566) and Richard Stancil (1628)
while James MacDougall (1728) defeated
Mike Isner, William Slade (1533) and Sam Copeland (1784). Each pocketed
$75.
In the Lower Section, Michael "the Savage" Savage
(1345) also
scored 3-0
with wins over Kevin Connelly (1132), Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1520) and
Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1447), wow!
Savage won $90.
Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1
winning $11.25
