NEWS &VIEWS 2-27-03
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Lane Leads Top; Baker, Callahan
Middle; J. Mu, Hicks Lower Section of Wendy's XLIII
Charlotte,
NC 2-26-03: Yet
another extraordinary turnout of 38 of the
Metrolina area's most active mental jousters participated in Rd:2
of Wendy's XLIII. In the Top Section, (sans NC
State Champion NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2255) who, because
of inclement weather, requested and received a half point Bye),
NM John "NightTrain" Lane (2080) broadsided
the stalled vehicle of NM Leland "El-Duce" Fuerstman (2033) to lead with
2-0.
Meanwhile, NM Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2198) gangbanged
the pride of Man-ha-en Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1824), Patrick
"Flanker"
McCartney
(2033) survived
an aggressive counter-attack against returnee to competition George "Mershon"
Melton (1928) and Clarke "Kent' Brosi (1870)
clobbered Michael Kliber (1926). In the Cruiserweight
Division,
Dr. Gerard "the Butcher" Sztyber (1736) (who incidently
takes credit for the world's first hemorrhoid transplant) heavily
sedated Frank "Moo" Mu (1717) but somehow allowed the patient
to escape from the operating table with a Draw. In the Middle
Section,
the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1600)
dribbled around Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1520) while Chris "Dirty
Harry"
Callahan (1511) made his day against Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian"
Ozherelyev (1600) to each lead with 2-0.
In addition, Paul "Survivalist"
Lucas (1619) upset Daryl
"Flash" Gordon (1700), Danesh Dadgar (1591) bested Doug "Sky" Millsaps
(1637) and "CEO" Mike Isner (1566) bought out Winfred "Guns" Gatlin
(1447). In the Lower Section, currently 6th on the Top
50 list, 7 year old phenom Joshua "Moo"
Mu (1383) defeated
Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1441) while Tony Hicks (1101) handled
Mike Richards (1360) to each lead with 2-0.
Other Lower Section winners were: Travis Filling,
Lee
"R&Bman"
Richardson, Clyde 'the Glide" Plyler,
CCC
Player
Representative Alphonse "Fonz" Ashamalla
(1355) and
Robert Broadbent. All results may be viewed in the

Moreira Perfect in Top; MacDougall,
Baker Middle; Savage Lower Section of
Smokehouse XXXVI
Charlotte,
NC 2-22-02: Almost three
complete sections of a total of 29
chessplayers from various origins participated
in Smokehouse XXXVI. In the Top Section,
which was noticably absent of many of Charlotte's top players, (some
speculated that the fear of losing was the reason),NM
Jairo
Moreira (2339) ran off consecutive wins against Chris "the Babe" Mabe
(1975), Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2048) and NM Joseph Jurjevich (2158)
to score a perfect 3-0
and take home $100.
Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1 were NM Joseph Jurjevich, Keith
Eubanks, Patrick McCartney and Chris Mabe (See
Game 0289) each winning $12.50.
In order to view NM Fuerstman's Rd:1 game versus Brosi (See
Game 0290) In the Middle
Section,
perfect 3-0's
were reported by two players. The
good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1600) registered wins
against Matthew Walker (1522), Mike Isner (1566) and Richard Stancil (1628)
while James MacDougall (1728) defeated
Mike Isner, William Slade (1533) and Sam Copeland (1784). Each pocketed
$75.
In the Lower Section, Michael "the Savage" Savage
(1345) also
scored 3-0
with wins over Kevin Connelly (1132), Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1520) and
Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1447), wow!
Savage won $90.
Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1
winning $11.25
were Gatlin, Tony Hicks, Travis Filling and Paul
Copeland. To view complete crosstable (Click
