NEWS & VIEWS 3-18-04
Four Lead Top; Taefi
"B"; Eadie "C"; Mitchell, Katz Lower Section on Wendy's LIV
Charlotte,
NC 3-17-04: A moderate turnout of 40
chess players dressed in leprechaun outfits gathered
at this arena of mental jousters more commonly
known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:2 of Wendy's
LIV.
(Just
prior to the round, the Manager and this TD witnessed a rather heated
discussion between two of our strongest Experts over a speed chess game
of all things...go figure!?) In the Top
Section, the
CCC's #1 player, NM
Frankie
"Blitzin" Newton (2242) squared off with CCC Favorite Son and (for
the 3rd year in a row!) N.C. Scholastic Champion Candidate Master Daniel
"Johnny" Tapia (2157) the result of which was Draw. Pacing the leaders
with 1.5-.5 is NM Leland "Premier
Hombre" Fuerstman (2000) who agreed to a "quick" Draw (I mean
like, a really quick Draw) with NM Daniel "Schlechter" Liu
(2037). In addition, Michael "See You Are; See You Are You" Curcuru
(2056) won a
tough ending versus Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2019) (See
Game 0384) {who incidentally took clear 1st
Place last weekend in Salisbury with 4.5-.5!},
Todd
"Flower Power" Trower (2017) executed a winning attack against Patrick
"Flanker" McCartney (2011) and Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (2005)
got by Frank Mu (1818). In the "B" Section, Tarokh "the Oak"
Taefi
(1729) was overheard mumbling, "Make my day, Punk" as he riddled Chris
"Dirty Harry" Callahan (1664) to lead with 2-0. Meanwhile,
Mark
"Shaken, not" Sturman (1709) demonstrated a rather clever conclusion
versus Michael "the Savage" Savage (1686), Viktor "the Mad Russian"
Ozherelyev
(1632) handed a loss to Marnzell "Pat" Hand (1600), Jeremy "Irons"
Davenport
(1641) split the point with
Ankit "Butch
Jivan (1649) and
Danesh
"DD" Dadgar (1759) ("Please don't make me play these kids!?")
yielded
a Draw to Tim "the Twin" Chen (1590). In the
"C" Section,
Dave
"Ameen"
Eadie (1492) prevailed after a rather complicated encounter
with Clyde "the Glyde" Plyler (1537) to lead with 2-0.
In addition, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1533) played "taps"
for Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1524), Kevin "Costner" Huang (1441)
prevailed over Jon "Phthisis" Hudson (Unr) and David "Dipper" Conard
(1589) squeeked by Samuel "Shinn" Xin (836). In the Lower
Section,
Jeff
Mitchell and Marty "Fritz" Katz lead with 2-0.
Other Lower Section winners were, Joshua "Moo" Mu,
Todd
Essex, Ervon "Wooden" Nichols, and Ilgin "the
Mad Turk" Birsan. All results may be observed on the "Current
Crosstable."All welcome new member Nate Bailey.
Next Smokehouse this Saturday, 3-20.
