 By NM Leland Fuerstman
Newton 1st Place in Top; Davenport?! "B"; Singleton "C"; Claitt 5-0 in Lower Section of Wendy's LIII; McCartney Censured.
Charlotte, NC 3-3-04:  A massive turnout of 66, including a near record 44 who participated in the final round, converged upon this holy temple of higher thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Wendy's LIIIIn the Top Section, capturing his record 34th Wendy's Title, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitzin" Newton (2263) was held to a hard fought Draw against Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2026) to finish 1st Place with 3.5-1.5. Equal 2nd-3rd Place were McCartney and NM Leland "El-Jefe" Fuerstman (2019) who split the point with NM Daniel "Schlechter" Liu (2036) each with 2.5-2.5. Meanwhile, Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1976) smote the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1781) as "George C" Scott Baldwin (1812) rendered shaken Mark "Stur"man (1700). In the "B" Section, Jeremy "Irons" Davenport (1603) who mysteriously avoided the top echelon of 1700's, split the point with returnee from Russia Michael "the Savage" Savage (1632) to take clear 1st Place with 3.5-1.5. In addition, Chris "Dirty "Harry" Callahan (1642) made his day against Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1712) who had apparently ingested to much "toxic waste," Bobby "the Duck" Waddell (1777) avenged Ken "the Terrible" Ivens (1744), Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi (1737) schooled Michael Easterwood (1650), Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1647) quashed the coup' of Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1647) and Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1632) expatriated Kaled "the Alphabet" Abdelkefi (1525). In the "C" Section, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1501) outdrew Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1510) to take clear 1st Place with 4.5-.5. Meanwhile, Kert "the Oracle" Edward (1497)'s prediction came true against Kevin "Spacey" Huang (1453), Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1460) roundkicked Vijay "Singh" Sethuraman (1428), Clyde "the Glyde" Plyler (1503) dunked on Tom "the Twin" Chen (1490) and Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn (1500) made peace with Tim "the Twin" Chen (1595). In the Lower Section, clear 1st Place was captured by Shawn "Penn" Claitt (1269) who went 5-0 and collected the $100 cash bonus! Other Lower Section winners were: Ervon "Wooden" Nichols, "Henry" Cabot Lineberger, Samuel "Shinn" Xin, Joshua "Moo" Mu, "Gentleman" Doug Corbett and Tony "the Tiger" Hicks. All results may be seen on "Current Crosstable."
All welcome new member Samuel Xin. Next Smokehouse Saturday, 3-20. Editor Needs Games; Please E-mail to: lelandfue@yahoo.com
Curcuru, Mabe Share Top Honors; Edward, Green Middle; Xin Lower Section of Smokehouse XLVIII
Charlotte, NC 2-21-04: A moderate turnout of 27 competitors from North and South Carolina journied to the Queen City in order to participate in Smokehouse XLVIIIIn the Top Section, Expert Michael "See You Are; See You Are You" Curcuru (2070) dispatched of Ken "the Terrible" Ivens (1744) and the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1851) before sharing the final point with Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1976) who registered wins against Mark Sturman (1750) and NM Leland "El-Jefe" Fuerstman (2019) (who for the second time in as many tries blundered away an equal game due to a minor distraction). Each scored 2.5-.5 and won $75The Middle Section honors were shared by Kert "the Oracle" Edward (1543) who defeated Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn (1500) and Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1647) prior to agreeing to Draw with "Mean" Matthew Green (1674) who got by Hayes "Let's Go" Bowling (1785) and Matthew "REman" Smith (1700). Each scored 2.5-.5 and won $75. In the Lower Section, Samuel "Shinn" Xin (536?) took a Bye and then rattled off wins against Patrick McGann (1140) and a disgusted Shawn "Penn" Claitt (1269) to score 3-0 and pocket $50. (Claitt should be admired for his restraint in not punching a 6 year old!?) To view complete crosstable (Click Here) (Fuerstman directed) Next Smokehouse March 20. See ya' there!
