NEWS & VIEWS 2-19-04
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Newton Leads Top; Davenport?! "B"; Singleton, Lee
"C"; Claitt 3-0 in Lower Section of Wendy's
LIII
Charlotte,
NC 2-18-04: A near record turnout of 44
of the Metrolina area's most enthusiastic energumens arrived
at this factory of creative thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's
in order to participate in Rd:3 of Wendy's LIII. In
the Top
Section, the CCC's #1 player, 33
time Wendy's champion, NM Frankie "Blitzin" Newton
(2263) snagged a piece early against veteran N.C. icon NM Daniel "Deep"
Liu (2036) and converted the win to lead with 2.5-.5.
Meanwhile, NM
Leland
"El-Jefe" Fuerstman (2019) employed a rare variation of the Sicilian
Defense which resulted in the demise of Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (2002),
Patrick
"Flanker" McCartney (2026) capitalized
on a late middlegame blunder by Michael "Jackson" Kliber (1928) and Jon
"Tal" Pietras (1801) executed a brilliant tactical sacrifice upon
Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1976). (See
Game 0381) Wow!! In the "B" Section,
recent transfer from the "C's" Jeremy "Irons" Davenport (1603)
deported Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1632) to lead with 2.5-.5.
Meanwhile, (renowned for performing the world's first hemorrhoid transplant),
the good Dr. Gerard "the Butcher" Sztyber (1743) exited the
operating room stating, "the operation was a success, but unfortunately,
the patient expired!?" after converting a possibly Drawn ending over
the good Reverned Bernard "King" Baker (1781). In addition, Chris
"Dirty Harry" Callahan (1642) chopped down Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi
(1730), Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1647) beat down Tim "the Twin"
Chen (1595) and Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1721) split the point
with "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1704). In the "C" Section,
leaders Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1460), who last weekend narrowly
missed a Draw against rising star Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia
(2160)!, made
peace with Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1501) whose
West
Charlotte
Chess Team finished clear 1st Place
in that same tournament! to each lead with 2.5-.5.
In addition,
Algye "Crumpler" Clyburn (1500) put a hard tackle
on Clyde "the Glyde" Plyler (1503), Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1607)
played a drum roll on Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1647) and Kermon Joel
Lane
(1540) wore a bullet proof vest against John "Windy" Gatlin (1510). In
the Lower Section, Shawn "Penn" Claitt (1269)
outplayed Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (Unr) to survive as the lone 3-0
in the tournament. Other Lower Section winners were: "Gentleman" Doug
Corbett, Glen "Taco" Bell, Tom "the Twin" Chen,
Joshua
"Moo"
Mu,
Robby
"Crusher" Broadbent, "Henry" Cabot Lineberger,
Ilgin
"the Mad Turk" Birsan and newcomer
Jonathan Hudson. All results
may be viewed in "Current
Crosstable." Visit the CCC Message
Board and speak to us!! All welcome new member Jonathan
Hudson. (Good Luck to Michael "the Savage"Savage
who is in Russia participating in a chess symposium and tournament. Sources
close to Savage report that he may defect?!) Next
Smokehouse this Saturday, 3-20.

Curcuru, Mabe Share Top Honors;
Edward, Green Middle; Xin Lower Section of Smokehouse XLVIII
Charlotte,
NC 2-21-04: A moderate
turnout of 27
competitors from North and South Carolina journied to the Queen City
in order to participate in Smokehouse XLVIII. In
the Top
Section, Expert Michael "See You Are; See
You Are You" Curcuru (2070) dispatched of Ken "the Terrible" Ivens
(1744) and the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1851) before sharing
the final point with Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1976) who registered
wins against Mark Sturman (1750) and NM Leland "El-Jefe" Fuerstman (2019)
(who
for the second time in as many tries blundered away an equal game due to
a minor distraction).
Each scored 2.5-.5
and won $75. The
Middle
Section
honors were shared by Kert "the Oracle"
Edward (1543) who
defeated Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn (1500) and Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1647)
prior to agreeing to Draw with "Mean" Matthew Green (1674) who got
by Hayes "Let's Go" Bowling (1785) and Matthew "REman" Smith (1700). Each
scored 2.5-.5
and won $75.
In the Lower Section, Samuel
"Shinn" Xin (536?) took a Bye and then rattled off wins against
Patrick McGann (1140) and a disgusted Shawn "Penn" Claitt (1269) to score
3-0
and pocket $50.
(Claitt
should be admired for his restraint in not punching a 6 year old!?)
