"Guess Who" Leads Top; Baker!? "B"; Tim Chen "C"; Katz Lower Section of Wendy's LIV
Charlotte, NC 3-24-04:  A near record 44 of the Metrolina area's most creative chess scientists gathered at this celebrated laboratory for extreme problem solving more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:3 of Wendy's LIV. In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitzin" Newton (2242) nosed 1/2 point ahead of the field with a decisive victory over veteran NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2037) to lead with 2.5-.5. Meanwhile, 9th on the list of 17 year olds in the Nation, CCC Favorite Son and three time NC Scholastic Champion Candidate Master Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2157) brutally assaulted NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman's (2000) Sicilian Dragon but eventually faultered whereby a "mercy" Draw was issued. In the "C" Section, Tim "the Twin" Chen (1540) revolted against Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1492) to lead with 2.5-.5. In addition, Tom "the Twin" Chen (1536) unloaded on Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1524), 49th ranked on the list of 11 year olds in the Nation Kevin "Costner" Huang (1441) tripped up 31st ranked on the list of 8 year olds in the nation Joshua "Moo" Mu (1345), Kaled "the Alphabet" Abdelkefi (1538) made peace with Marnzell "Pat" Hand (1600) as did Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1533) with Clyde "the Glyde" Plyler (1537). In the Lower Section, Marty "Fritz" Katz (1258) defeated Jeff "Gordon" Mitchell (Unr) to remain as the only 3-0 in the tournament.
