In Memoriam: The CCC observed a moment of
silence for the passing of long time NC chess icon Bernard
Schmidt of Raleigh. Rest in peace, friend.
|
-Flash--Flash--Flash--Flash--Flash-Charlotte,
NC 4-3-04: Because of her exceptional recent results, the
Executive Committee
of the CCC has determined that until further notice, 15 year old LAURA
LEE has earned the honor of competing in the
"B"
Section of all CCC rated events. According
to Expert Chris Mabe, "the girl is on a rampage." You go, girl! LF

NEWS & VIEWS 4-1-04
Newton Leads Top; Baker!?
"B"; Huang "C"; Katz Lower Section of Wendy's LIV
Charlotte,
NC 3-31-04: A rather
light turnout, probably due to the inclement weather, of only 32
of the Metrolina area's most ambitious competitors gathered
at this arena of mental jousters more commonly known as Wendy's in order
to participate in Rd:4 of Wendy's LIV.
In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie
"Blitzin" Newton (2242) played some kinda crazy counter gambit (1
d4 d5 2 c4 e5!?) against NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2000) and
was summarily crushed!! APRIL FOOL!
Actually, Frankie somehow survived the Q vs. R's ending to lead with 3.5-.5.
Meanwhile, Draws were registered by 9th
on the list of 17 year olds in the Nation,
CCC Favorite Son and three time NC Scholastic Champion Candidate
Master Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2157)
versus #1 Ranked
Hippie Chess Player in the Nation Todd
"Flower Power" Trower (2017), Michael "Jackson" Kliber
(1937) versus NC icon NM Daniel "Schlechter" Liu (2037) and
Clarke
"Kent" Brosi (1829) versus Mark "Shaken, not"
Sturman
(1709). In the "B" Section, the good reverend
Bernard
"King" Baker (1774) yielded a Draw to Danesh "DD" Dadgar
(1759) but
still leads with 3-1.
In addition, Michael "the Savage" Savage (1686) savagely
beat Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1606) with his own sticks and Chris "Dirty
Harry" Callahan (1664) split the point with Jeremy "Irons"
Davenport
(1641). In the "C" Section, Kevin "Costner"
Huang
(1441) upended Clyde "the Glyde" Plyler (1537) to lead with
3-0.
In addition, 15 year old Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1452)
(who incidentally took clear 2nd Place in a local tournament last weekend
with upset wins over Scott Baldwin (1819),
Jackie Ryan (1721)
and a material up draw against Chris Mabe (2019)
defeated
Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn (1500), Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton
(1533) welcomed newcomer Richard Towell (Unr) and Dave "Ameen" Eadie
(1492) made a truce with Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev
(1546). In the Lower Section, Marty "Fritz" Katz
(1258) ran into a buzzsaw against Joshua "Moo" Mu (1345)
but still leads with 3-1.
(Thanks,
Josh!) Other Lower Section winners were:
William Dewbre,
Hassan
"HH" Hashemloo and "Gentleman"
Doug Corbett.
All results
may be observed on the "Current Crosstable."
Next Smokehouse Saturday, 4-17.
