Pietras Slows Newton; Four in Lead Lap of Wendy's XIV

A grand total of twenty-eight of the greater Charlotte area's most gifted and talented thinkers abandoned their more important projects and instead participated in Rd:2 of Wendy's XIV.  In the Top Section, tournament leader recently crowned National Master "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2202) found himself holding the "fouled" end of the stick in a piece for 3 pawns ending versus Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc" Pietras (1745). Thanks to the superior negotiating skills of this Director, the "good merchant" added a well deserved feather to his cap by foregoing the adjournment and agreeing to Draw! To view Newton's Rd:1 encounter with Ralph Lombard (See Game 0110)   Also in the Top Section, NM Leland Fuerstman (2073) caught the leaders with a nifty win with the Black pieces over Patrick McCartney (1873)  (See Game 0111) while CCC Favorite Son 16 year old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2026) did the same to NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000). In the Middle Section, Algie Clyburn (1533) defended to the hilt against Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1552) to lead the section with 2-0 while Slobodan Sinanovic (1415) initiated returnee to CCC competition from 20 years ago, Henry Martinat (1400A). In addition, Darrell Spencer (1399) handled "Iron" Mike Isner (1435) while CCC Internal Affairs Committee Chairman Paul F. Lucas (1600) drew with "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1650). Finally, Paul "SM" Calloway (1699) trounced Joe Feiler (1109).  In the Lower Section, perfect scores of 2-0 were maintained by Helton Clavijo (1289) and Timothy Ruffin (1161) who will meet in a showdown next Wednesday.  Other Lower Section winners were, Lee "R&Bman" Richardson, David Roman, newcomer Robert Schifferle and Jim Ulaky. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." A warm welcome to new members Henry Martinat and Toby Hart. Good Luck to all of our Scholastic members who will be competing in the Nationals this weekend here in Charlotte! Just win, Baby!! LF

Burlington Yields Three Champions From CCC
The North Carolina Class Championships held in Burlington this past weekend witnessed CCC's very own Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1547) capture clear 1st Place in the Under 1600 Section with 4-1 winning $350! But, twice as much glory was enjoyed by Team Brown as they took care of business with Brandon Brown winning 1st Place in the Under 1200 Section and father Terry Brown winning 1st Place in the Under 1000 Section.  Congratulations champions! For the complete story see "Father and Son Strike Gold" on CCC Message Board.

Newton Acts Like IRS -  Seizes Cash; Brandon Brown Perfect in Lower Section of Smokehouse III
Twenty chess energumens (including 4 chessmasters) disguised as normal taxpayers forwent filing their income tax forms on Saturday, April 15 and instead participated in Smokehouse III.  In the Top Section, recently crowned National Master "WWF" Frankie Newton (2202) refused to issue a deferment avoiding a final round draw versus frontrunner NM Leland Fuerstman (2084) to score 2.5-.5 and take home $100 cash. Equal 2nd-5th were NM Klaus Pohl (2222) (from Greenville, S.C.), NM Leland Fuerstman (2084), NM Daniel Liu (2000) and Patrick McCartney (1853) each with 2-1 winning $12.50. In the Lower Section, Brandon Brown (1255) posting the only perfect 3-0 of the tournament also collected $100. Laurin Keller (1369), Joe Feiler (1079), Darrell Spencer (1364) and "Iron" Mike Isner (1435) each scored 2-1 and pocketed $12.50. Fuerstman directed.
