NEWS & VIEWS 4-8-04
Newton, Tapia Take Top;
Baker "B"; Eadie "C"; Katz Lower Section of Wendy's LIV
Charlotte,
NC 4-7-04: A rather
impressive total of 73 mental
competitors (5
short of the record), some from parts unknown,
terminated at this sacred shrine of champions more
commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Wendy's LIV.
In the Top Section, envoking the "Fischer Rule" and securing
his unprecedented 35th Wendy's Title, the CCC's #1 player,
NM Frankie "Blitzin" Newton (2242) used this as a rest week
and still had just enough to tie for 1st-2nd Place
with 7th
on the list of 17 year olds in the Nation,
CCC Favorite Son and three time NC Scholastic Champion Candidate
Master Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2157) who
bested NC icon NM Daniel "Deep Liu (2037) each with 3.5-1.5.
Meanwhile, member of the N.C. Chess Hall of Fame,
NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2000) finished 3rd
Place with 3-2
after he clobbered Michael "Jackson" Kliber (1937) with an opening trick
cheapo (See Game 0388), celebrated
SC Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2054) survived another incredible
MeeLie massacre versus Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (2005) (See
Game 0389)
and
James "Big" MacDougall (1831) used kryptonite and locked
the phone booth on Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1829) In order to view MacDougal's
victory over IM Danny Kopec (See
Game 0390). In the Middle
Section,
clearly substantiating his superiority, the good Reverend
Bernard
"King" Baker (1774) survived
a rather energetic effort by "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1734) to take clear
1st
Place with 4-1.
Meanwhile, Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1546) won
what appeared to be a drawn ending against Michael "the Savage" Savage
(1686), Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1650) beat Shawn "Penn" Claitt
(1600) and Mark "Shaken, not" Sturman (1709) split
the point with
49th on
the list of Women Under 16 years old in the Nation Laura
"Karate Kid" Lee (1700+). In the "C" Section, Dave
"Ameen" Eadie (1492) slew the Dragon versus newcomer John "the Siberian"
Grechka (1424) to take clear 1st Place with 3.5-1.5.
In addition, 53rd on
the list of 11 year olds in the Nation Michael
"Angelo" Easterwood (1473) out gunned Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1524),
Spencer
"Jazzman"
Singleton
(1533) shook with Marnzell "Pat"
Hand (1600) and the "Chen
Twins," Tom (1540) and Tim (1536) yielded Draws to Jared
"Codes" Morse (1466) and Phil Whittington (1502) respectively.
In the Lower
Section,
Marty "Fritz"
Katz (1258) defeated
Ilgin "the Mad Turk" Birsan (1130) to take clear 1st Place with
4-1.
Other
Lower Section winners were: Jonathan Hudson,
Hassan
"HH"
Hashemloo,
Robert
Broadbent and Samuel Xin. All results may be observed
on the "Current Crosstable."
All welcome new members Phil Whittington,
John
Grechka and Asya Grechka. Next Smokehouse
Saturday, 4-17.
