CCC Captures 5th State Title!
Raleigh, NC 5-16-04:
The
CCC's #1 player, and the pride of Crouse,
NC, NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton
(2246) scored 3.5-1.5 against a strong
field of Masters including NM John Bidwell, NM Greg Samsa, NM Vann Alan
Patrick (See Game 0398) NM Craig Jones and
NM Neal Harris to take clear 1st Place and the Title
of 2004 North Carolina Invitational Champion!
"You da' man, Frankie...just win baby!!" (Now the CCC is 5
for 5!; the 6th Title, the 2004 NC Championship is still up for
grabs!) Oh, by the way, CCC Expert Michael Curcuru is the 2004
South Carolina State Champion! |

Newton Leads Top; Hand "B"; Gatlin "C"; Katz Lower
Section of Wendy's LVI

reasonable summertime turnout of 26
of the Metrolina area's most ardent competitors and another dozen or so
members who chose not to play the rated game?!
gathered at this sacred temple of Caissa more commonly known as Wendy's
in order to participate in Rd:4 of Wendy's LVI. In
the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player and 2004 North Carolina
Invitational Chess Champion, the pride of Crouse, NC, NM Frankie
"Neutron" Newton (2243) defended to the hilt against NM Leland "Premier
Hombre" Fuerstman (2026) to lead with 4-0. In
addition, Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (1997) clobbered Michael "Jordan"
Kliber (1910) while the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker
(1807) split the point with Ken "the Terrible" Ivens (1637).
In the "B" Section, though he was mauled by Dave "the Bear"
Griffin
(1620), Marnzell "Pat" Hand (1600) still leads with 2-2?! Meanwhile,
Viktor
"the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1590) beat down Ankit "Butch" Jivan
(1664) and Kevin "Spacey" Huang (1592) knocked off Spencer
"Jazzman" Singleton (1630). In the "C" Section, Winfred "Guns"
Gatlin
(1451) unloaded on James "Sticks" Ulaky (1552) to lead with
3-1.
In addition, Kert "Oracle" Edward (1540) bested "Henry" Cabot
Lineberger (1163) while Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1554) drew with
Jiri
Janko (1482).
In the Lower Section, Marty "Fritz" Katz (1280)
upset John "the Mad Siberian" Grechka (1377) to lead with 4-0.
Other Lower Section winners were: Todd Essex, Stephen
Wang and F. Dean Betts. All results may be observed on
the "Current Crosstable."

Kevin Huang; Moving Up
Rapidly!
According to his most current rating, added to his 5-0
in Wendy's LV (where
his performance rating was 2030),
the USCF rating calculator indicates Kevin Huang's
new rating to be 1700! moving him up 42 places
on the list of 11 year olds in the nation to #17!
Kevin is currently the 2004 K-5 NC State Champion. The CCC shines again! |
Baker Takes Top; C. Wheeless
Lower Section of Smokehouse LI
Charlotte,
NC 5-15-04: A
moderate turnout of 20
competitors from North and South Carolina journied to the Queen City
in order to participate in Smokehouse LI. In the Top
Section,
the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1807) of Charlotte
captured clear 1st Place as
he dispatched of Randy "Wheels" Wheeless (1601), Jonathan "the Enforcer"
Munnell (1751) and Daniel Solarez (1682) to score a perfect 3-0
and pocket $100.
(His easy schedule may have been due to a 2nd Rd pairing error by this
TD), as 7th
on the list of 17 year olds in the Nation,
CCC Favorite Son and three time NC Scholastic Champion Candidate
Master Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2157) shared equal 2nd-3rd
Place with Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2019) each scoring
2.5-.5
and winning $25.
Taking clear 1st Place in the Lower Section, 16 year
old Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1349) of Charlotte bested
Paul Copeland (1211), Thomas Garcia (1565) and Phil Whittington (1524)
to score a perfect 3-0
and collect $100.
Clear 2nd Place went to Matthew Greene (Unr) with 2.5-.5
winning $50.
