Newton Leads Top; Savage, Callahan "B"; Huang "C";
Grechka Lower Section of Wendy's LV
Charlotte,
NC 4-28-04: Another
super strong turnout of 42
of the Metrolina area's most competent calculators forwent
their more important responsibilities and instead participated in Rd:3
of Wendy's LI. In
the Top Section, the pride of Crouse, NC and the CCC's #1
player NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton (2242) out maneuvered
NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2000) to lead with 2.5-.5.
Meanwhile, Todd "Flower Power" Trower (2019) vanquished
the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1774), NM Daniel "Schlechter"
Liu
(2037) split the point with NM John "3:16"Lane
(2078) and Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2011) overlooked
a forced mate and agreed to Draw with Chris "the Babe"
Mabe
(2019). In
the "B" Section, Michael "the Savage" Savage (1716)
expatriated Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1507) and Chris
"Dirty Harry" Callahan (1664) made peace with Danesh "DD" Dadgar
(1759) to each lead with 2-1.
Meanwhile, Mark "Shaken, not" Sturman (1709) survived a botched
surgery by Dr. Gerard "the Butcher" Sztyber (1753), Marnzell "Pat"
Hand
(1600) schooled Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (1550) and Kert "Oracle"
Edward
(1592)
Drew with Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1650). In the "C" Section, CCC
rising superstar Kevin "Spacey" Huang (1441) did a drum roll
on Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1606) to lead with 3-0!
In addition, Joshua "Moo" Mu (1407) overpowered Dave "Ameen"
Eadie (1492), Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1524) bested Tim "the
Twin" Chen (1560), Phillip " Morris" Whittington (1502)
demonstrated his rating superiority over a stubborn Michael "Angelo" Easterwood
(1501) and Tom
"the Twin" Chen (1556) split the point with Jonathan "Lex"
Hudson
(Unr). In the Lower Section, newcomer
John
"the
Mad Siberian" Grechka (1224) bested Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (950)
to lead with 3-0.
Other Lower Section winners were: Marty "Fritz" Katz,
Doyle
"Kill Bill" Dewbre, Asya Grechka and F. Dean Betts.
All

NC 4-17-04: A moderate
turnout of 24
competitors from North and South Carolina journied to the Queen City
in order to participate in Smokehouse L. On this festive
occasion, five
auspicious players received free lunches
as well as 2 Charlotte chess club tee
shirts won by Patrick McGann and Dr. Gerard
"the Butcher" Sztyber. An
enjoyable time was had by all! In the Top Section, member
of the NC Chess
Hall of Fame NM Leland "Premier
Hombre" Fuerstman (2000) of Charlotte dispatched of Robert C. Moore
(1700) and Expert Michael "See You Are; See You Are You" Curcucu (2056)
(See
Game 0392) before agreeing
to a GM Draw with Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2011) of Charlotte
who bested Mark "Shaken, not" Sturman (1709) and Chris "the Babe" Mabe
(2019). Each scored 2.5-.5
and pocketed $75. In
the Lower Section, Jeremy "Irons Davenport
(1641) of Charlotte defeated Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1492) and Michael "Angelo"
Easterwood (1474) before playing to a Draw with Daniel Solarez (1682)
of Raleigh who handled Kevin "Spacey" Huang (1441) and Michael "the Savage"
Savage (1686). Each scored 2.5-.5
and took home $75.
