"You da' man, Frankie...just win baby!!" (Now the CCC is 5 for 5!; the 6th Title, the 2004 NC Championship is still up for grabs!) Oh, by the way, CCC Expert Michael Curcuru is the 2004 South Carolina State Champion! CCC NEWS & VIEWS 5-13-04 Newton Wins Top; Dadgar "B"; Huang 5-0 in "C"; Grechka, Nichols Lower Section of Wendy's LV Charlotte, NC 5-12-04:  A grand total of 67 of the Metrolina area's most competent calculators converged upon this supreme court of chess arenas more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Wendy's LV. (See "Final Decision of the "Committee"). In the Top Section, clear 1st Place was once again claimed by the CCC's #1 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton (2242) who issued a quick Draw to Expert Todd "Flower Power" Trower (2017) to score 4-1 and win his unprecedented 36th Wendy's Title! Meanwhile, 7th on the list of 17 year olds in the Nation, CCC Favorite Son and three time NC Scholastic Champion Candidate Master Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2157) yielded a middlegame Draw to NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2000) and ex-USCF office employee Shawn "Potato" Pealer (1950) slipped by the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1774). In the "B" Section, after 6 consecutive Draws (not a record; NM DL 26! LOL), Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1759) unleashed a fearsome counter-attack upon Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1543) to capture clear 1st Place with 3-2. Meanwhile, David "the Bear" Griffin (1620) mauled Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1664), Brian "Tiger" Woods (1614) teed off on Marnzell "Pat" Hand (1600) and Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1650) split the point with Jonathan "River" Hudson (Unr). In the "C" Section, though 2 of his opponents were "B's", 59th on the list of 11 year olds in the Nation Kevin "Spacey" Huang (1441) hung tough with Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1492) to take clear 1st Place with 5-0 and pocket the $100 Bonus! In addition, Kert "Oracle" Edward (1592) muted the trumpet of Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1533), 53rd on the list of 11 year olds in the Nation Michael "Angelo" Easterwood (1474) traded his Queen for 2 Rooks and bested 7th on the list of 8 year olds in the Nation Joshua "Moo" Mu (1417) and Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1524) riddled Todd "E-sex" Essex (1220). In the Lower Section, the Birthday Boy John "the Mad Siberian" Grechka (1220) ran into a buzzsaw versus Austin "Powers" Scott (1411) but still tied for =1st-2nd Place with Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (950) who slipped by Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (954) each with 4-1. Other Lower Section winners were: Marty "Fritz" Katz, Randy "King" Hunter, Robert "Crusher" Broadbent and Shawn "Penn" Claitt. According to his most current rating, added to his 5-0 in Wendy's LV (where his performance rating was 2030), the USCF rating calculator indicates Kevin Huang's new rating to be 1700! moving him up 42 places on the list of 11 year olds in the nation to #17! Kevin is currently the 2004 K-5 NC State Champion. The CCC shines again! Baker Takes Top; C. Wheeless Lower Section of Smokehouse LI Charlotte, NC 5-15-04:  A moderate turnout of 20 competitors from North and South Carolina journied to the Queen City in order to participate in Smokehouse LI. In the Top Section, the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1807) of Charlotte captured clear 1st Place as he dispatched of Randy "Wheels" Wheeless (1601), Jonathan "the Enforcer" Munnell (1751) and Daniel Solarez (1682) to score a perfect 3-0 and pocket $100. (His easy schedule may have been due to a 2nd Rd pairing error by this TD), as 7th on the list of 17 year olds in the Nation, CCC Favorite Son and three time NC Scholastic Champion Candidate Master Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2157) shared equal 2nd-3rd Place with Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2019) each scoring 2.5-.5 and winning $25. Taking clear 1st Place in the Lower Section, 16 year old Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1349) of Charlotte bested Paul Copeland (1211), Thomas Garcia (1565) and Phil Whittington (1524) to score a perfect 3-0 and collect $100.
