 Wendy's XXXVI Begins; CCC on TV!
Charlotte, NC  6-12-02: Forty of the Metrolina area's most convivial chess players participated in Rd:1 of Wendy's XXXVI. (A few CCC members will realize their 15 minutes of fame tomorrow evening as the Charlotte Chess Club will be featured on "Carolina Traveler," NBC6 at 9:00pm!)In the Top Section, the CCC's #2 player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2214) celebrated the marriage of Paul McCartney by consumating Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1910), Expert Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2195) locked the phone booth of mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1809), NM Garrick H.G. "Outlaw" Wells (2085) blew smoke rings around Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1750), NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2009) burst the pipes of Jeffrey "Liquid" Plummer (1745) (See Game 0234) and NM Daniel "Schlecter" Liu (2000) split the point with Slobodan "the Mad Serb"  Sinanovic (1724). In the Middle Section, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1644) blew out the speakers of Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg (1498), Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1597) used his raygun on Henry Martinat (1456), Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1408) upset Algie "Van" Clyburn (1535), John Ellis (1403) bested Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup (1488) and the good Minister Bernard "Jim" Baker (1467) upset Robert "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1648). In addition, Draws were reported between Euphemia Mu (1500) and "Smokin" Brian Fraiser (1644) and Mike "Sell Short" Bloomberg (1478) and Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1600). In the Lower Section, wins were reported by: Winfred "Guns" Gatlin, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, Mike Richards, Ankit Jivan, Todd Essex and Darrell "Wilkes" Booth. GM Becerra Wins $500 Sunday Special I
Charlotte, NC Jun 2-02: A total of thirty-eight of the Metrolina area's most active chess players participated in Sunday Special I, a tournament which was designed to allow 5 members of the CCC to face a Grandmaster in tournament competition. The prize fund was gathered by donations from generous CCC members. In the Top Section, as expected, International Grandmaster Julio Becerra (2605) emerged victorious after his encounter with Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1910)  (See Game 0232) to finish with a perfect 5-0 and take home the 1st Prize of $500. Clear 2nd Place with 4-1, after his final round victory versus NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2009) was Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2195). Meanwhile, Draws were submitted by CCC Favorite Son, 17 year old phenom Justin "Dog" Daniel (2177) vs. the CCC's #2 player NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2214) and mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1809) vs. NM Daniel "Schlecter" Liu (2000). In the Middle Section, Danesh "Ayatollah" Dadgar (1621) outlasted Minister Bernard "Jim" Baker (1486) to take top honors with 4-1. In addition, Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1686) bested Frank Mu (1582), Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1600) supplanted "Smokin" Brian Fraiser (1644) and Victor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1420) handled Jonathan Roes (776). In the Lower Section, 7 year old phenom, Joshua Mu (1235)  scored a perfect 5-0 after his final round victory over Hassan Hashemloo (Unr). To view crosstable click hereNext Smokehouse July 13.
Jurjevich Sweeps Top; Moore, Waddell Middle; Pruitt Lower Section of Smokehouse XXVIII
Charlotte, NC 6-15-02: A reasonably moderate turnout of  27 players from many areas participated in Smokehouse XXVIII. In the Top Section, NM Joseph Jurjevich (2121) of Asheville dispatched of mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1809) in Rd:1, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton in Rd:2 and Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2036) in the ultimate round to score 3-0 and pocket $100Clear 2nd Place was SM Klaus Pohl (2215) of Greenville, SC who scored 2.5-.5 and won $50. Middle Section honors were shared by Robert C. Moore (1708) and Austin CC's Bobby Waddell (1640) each with 2.5-.5 winning $75The Lower Section was dominated by Austin CC's Norm Pruitt (1084) who scored a perfect 3-0 and won $40.
