Newton Leads Top; DeBell, Baker Middle; Huang, Fisher Lower Section of Wendy's XXXV
Charlotte, NC  5-22-02:  Forty-one of the greater Charlotte area's most congenial chessplayers escaped from the perpetual radiation of their cathode tubes and instead participated in Rd:3 of Wendy's XXXV. In the Top Section, the CCC's #2 player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2214) persisted in a R&P ending versus NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2009) until the latter player faultered leaving Newton with 2.5-.5. Meanwhile, NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) gunned down NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2085), Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1910) knocked Michael Curcuru (1854) coo-coo and Harold Mouzon (2195) split the point with Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1750). In the Cruiserweight Division Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1809) knocked out "Smokin" Brian Fraiser (1644). In the Middle Section, leader Jerome "Cookie Monster" DeBell (1648) split the point with Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1617).  Otherwise, the Black pieces prevailed as the Reverend Bernard "Jim" Baker (1471) recited a eulogy for "Hell's Kitchen" product Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1602)  (See Game 0229) , Danesh "Ayatollah" Dadgar (1621) vanquished Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1422), Frank Mu (1526) neutralized the ray-gun of Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1609) and David "Richman" Richards (1716) deported Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1696). In the Lower Section, leading with 2.5-.5, Kevin Huang (1140) handled Kevin Blackwell (880) while Jim "Bobby" Fisher (865) took out Todd Essex (855). Other Lower Section winners were: Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, Mike Richards, Ankit Jivan, Joshua Mu, Jim "Sticks" Ulaky, Hassan Hashemloo, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton and I'John Gatewood. GM Becerra Takes Commanding Lead in $500 Sunday Special I
Charlotte, NC 5-26-02: Twenty chess energumens left the race track early and instead participated in Rd:4 of Sunday Special I. In the Top Section, GM Julio Becerra (2605) concluded his encounter with NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2009) with a cute Queen sacrifice to take a commanding lead of 4-0 and the guaranteed 1st Prize of $500!(See Game 0230) Meanwhile, Expert Harold Mouzon (2195) survived a wild encounter with Expert Gary "Player" Newsom (2014) (See Game 0231) , the CCC's #2 player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2214) used kryptonite on mild mannered Clarke" Kent" Brosi (1809) and CCC Favorite Son, 17 year old phenom, Expert Justin "Dog" Daniel (2177) won a difficult game versus Jeff Rayfield (1837). In the Middle Section, Danesh "Ayatollah" Dadgar (1621) shares the lead with 3-0 after slaughtering Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1602) as does Minister Bernard "Jim" Baker (1484) after his win over Frank Mu (1526). In addition, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1640) foreclosed upon Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg (1482). In the Lower Section, 7 year old phenom, Joshua Mu (1184) outplayed Kevin Hicks (999) to lead with a perfect 4-0. Other Lower Section winners were: Jonathan Roes. Newsom, McCartney Share Top Honors; Brazhnikov Middle; Nevitt Lower Section of Smokehouse XXVII
Charlotte, NC 5-11-02: A moderate turnout of 26 participated in Smokehouse XXVII. In the Top Section, Expert Gary "Player" Newsom (2014) dispatched of Chris Mabe (1773) and NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2027) before agreeing to a Draw with co-winner Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1923) who had defeated Sam Copeland (1722) and SM Klaus Pohl (2225). Their score of 2.5-.5 earned each $75. In the Middle Section, for the second consecutive Smokehouse, Gennady Brazhnikov (1300)scored a perfect 3-0 winning $100. Equal 2nd-5th were Joe Crump (1433), Hayes Bowling (1663), Laurin Keller (1511) and Kirill Temlyakov (1433) each scoring 2-1 and pocketing $12.
