NEWS &VIEWS 5-30-02 By NM Leland Fuerstman Newton Leads Top; Brosi, Dadgar, Baker Middle;
Jivan, K. Blackwell Lower Section of Wendy's XXXV Charlotte,
NC 5-29-02: Thirty-eight of the greater
Metrolina area's most gifted chess genii first gave three cheers to the
"Carolina Hurricanes" and then participated
in Rd:4 of Wendy's XXXV. In
the Top Section, with time running out on the game
clock, the CCC's #2 player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton
(2214) hurled a few hocky pucks of his own at goalie NM Daniel "Deep" Liu
(2000) to lead his closest competitor by one full point at 3.5-.5.
Meanwhile,NM
Garrick
"Outlaw" Wells (2085) scored against defenseman Jon "Cigars" Pietras
(1751) as ties (Draws) were submitted by

(2177) versus the CCC's #3 player, Harold "Wyn" Mouzon III
(2195) and NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2009)
versus Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1910). Though the latter
sudden-death pure R vs R ending saw both players "drop their
gloves," cooler heads prevailed.(In
such situations, a player need only to "stop the clocks" and claim
the Draw) In theCruiserweight Division, mild
mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1809) found an available phone
booth, and asserted his "superman" powers against Michael "the Lip" Lipkin
(1746). In the Middle Section, Danesh "Shah"
Dadgar
(1621) squandered the assets of Jerome "Cookie Monster" DeBell (1648),

"Richman" Richards (1716) scored on Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1597),

"the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1696) short circuited Nathan "TechDude"
Eerenberg (1482) and Paul "Survivalist"
Lucas (1600) upset
7 year old phenom Joshua Mu (1200). In addition, the good Minister Bernard
"Jim" Baker (1521) (we love ya' "Bman") split the point with
Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1640). In the Lower
Section,
Ankit
Jivan (1165) and
Kevin Blackwell (938) lead with 3-1
after victories over Kevin Huang (985) and James "Bobby" Fisher (858) respectively.

"Sticks"
Ulaky,
Robert "Dirty Harry" Callahan and Paul
"Johnny" Walker. All results may be viewed in the
