NEWS & VIEWS 6-24-04
Wendy's LVII Begins
Charlotte,
NC 6-23-04: A rather light turnout
of 26 loyal and happy members of the Charlotte
Chess Club proudly rejected the idea of playing at another chess
club which, for some strange reason, discourteously decided to meet on
Wednesday evening?!? and instead chose to dine on the sumptuous cuisine
of Wendys, engage in stimulating intellectual conversation and participate
in Rd:1 of Wendy's LVII.
(It
has also been brought to my attention that, in violation of the USCF Code
of Ethics, that same director has recently promoted tournaments on the
same
day as the Smokehouse???...an unfriendly act which is certainly counterproductive
for our small chess community. What ever happened to common courtesy?) In
the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, the pride of Crouse,
NC, 2004 NC Invitational Champion NM Frankie "Neutron" Newton
(2248) burst out of the blocks with a victory over Shawn "Arlo" Pealer
(1988) to share the lead with 1-0.
(FACTOID:
On 8-20-03, now referred to as "Black Wednesday,"
NM Newton was defeated by Expert Daniel Tapia. Since then he has played
41
consecutive games at the CCC without a loss!!!) In
addition, SC Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2049) has one
point after defeating NM Leland "Premier Hombre" Fuerstman (2025). In
the "B" Section, Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1639) snagged
a piece out of the opening and bested Kevin "Spacey" Huang (1691) while
Dave "the Bear" Griffin (1645) was upset by Dave "Ameen" Eadie
(1555). In the "C" Section, Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1525)
did a drum roll on Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1472) while John "the
Mad Siberian" Grechka (1406) split the point with Jonathan
"River" Hudson (1467).
In the Lower Section, wins were reported by Marty
"Fritz" Katz, Todd "E-sex" Essex, Ervon "Wooden"
Nichols,
Kelvin
Howard, Samuel "Reshevsky"
Xin
and Stephen Wang. All results may be observed on the "Current
Crosstable." Next Smokehouse this Saturday,
July
17.
