Light Turnout Ushers in Wendy's XVI

No less (nor more) than two dozen of the greater Charlotte area's most prodigious chess players congregated at our hallowed temple of thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's on Wednesday evening in order to compete in Rd:1 of Wendy's XVI. (The light turnout may be due to the large contingent of CCC players who will be competing at the World Open in Philadelphia this weekend.) In the Top Section, the results are still unclear after Greg "Hornblower" Hall (1863) nicked NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2029) for a Draw while on Bd:1, NM Leland Fuerstman (2006) pressed on in an OCB+Rooks ending against the French Defense of Gary "the nuisance" Newsom (1920) to emerge into a promising exchange up adjournment. (See Game 0126)  Meanwhile, Wendy's XV Champion Patrick McCartney (1895) seeks to win an adjourned K+P ending versus Jon "Infinity's End and Cigar, Etc" Pietras (1784).  In the Middle Section, CCC Website Advisor Carl McKern (1500) knocked off  Wendy's XV Middle Section Champion Darrell "Little Kobe" Spencer (1332) while Slobodan Sinanovic (1488) upset visitor from Georgia, Gil Holmes (1671). In the Cruiserweight Division, Samuel Christopher (1163) was overwhelmed by Paul "Shuttleman" Calloway (1675). In the Lower Section, wins were posted by Daryl "Flash" Gordon, Jim Ulaky, Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup and Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla.  All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."  All welcome new CCC member Frank Mu.

SM Pohl, NM Liu Share Top Honors; Samuel Christopher Sweeps Lower Section in Smokehouse V

Seventeen weekend warriors participated in Smokehouse V on Saturday, 6-3-00.  In the Top Section, SM Klaus Pohl (2200) from Greenville, S.C. (captured here doing his best Doc Watson impersonation) dispatched of Gary Newsom (1902) and Patrick McCartney (1917) before agreeing to a "quick" draw with NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) who had defeated Jerome DeBell (1627) and NM Leland Fuerstman (2058) respectively.  Each took home $75. In the Lower Section,  Samuel Christopher (1052) scored a perfect 3-0 to take home the 1st Place prize of $70. Equal 2nd-4th with a score of 2-1 were Darrell Spencer (1327), Pete Danker (1310) and Daniel Tapia (990) each winning $12.
