"Kamikaze" Derails "Night-Train", Newton Takes Top Honors; Jenkins Middle; Johnson Lower Section of Wendy's XXVI
McCartney Defeats one "Ju", Loses to Another!?

Charlotte, NC 7-18-01: A record tying sixty-three! of the Metrolina area's most aspiring chessplayers forwent their less important obligations and instead participated in Wendy's XXVI. In the Top Section, co-leader NM Frankie "Neutron Bomb" Newton II (2190) had his ordnance defused by NM Daniel "Schlecter-the Drawing Master" Liu (2011).  Fortunately, yielding the Draw still allowed Newton to finish clear 1st Place with 3.5-1.5.
Meanwhile, co-leader NM John "Night-Train" Lane (2095) suffered the indignity of a surprise attack by David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1864) leaving Lane with an =2nd-3rd result of 3-2. Also scoring 3-2 was NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2027) who, with a successful exchange sacrifice, (See Game 0187)  rose to the occasion versus newly crowned Expert Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2001).(To view one of McCartney's games from the World Open  (See Game 0186)  In addition, CCC Favorite Son 17 year old Expert Justin Daniel (2150), (who just returned from the World Open where he scored 7-2! in the Under 2200 Section pocketing $2,375 and most probably achieving the Title of National Master!),bested Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1808). In the Middle Section, D. Paul Jenkins (1587) outlasted Danesh "the Mad Iranian" Dadgar to take clear 1st Place with 3.5-1.5.Also, in the Middle Section, Slobodan (Pronounced Slo-bo-dan) Sinanovic (1625) slapped Marnzell('s) Hand (1605) while "CEO" Mike Isner (1455) upset "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1690).  In the Lower Section, vying for a $100 Bonus, leader Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1270) was unable to hold off the assault of Brandon "Esq.Jr" Brown (1439) but still finished clear 1st Place with 4-1. Other Lower Section winners were: Scott Grimes, Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup, Robert Broadbent, Todd Essex, Euphemia Mu, Randy "King" Hunter,Copeland Blackwell, Jim "Sticks" Ulaky and Joe "SticksJr" Ulaky. All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable."  All welcome new CCC members Harold"Winn"Mouzon III (2190), Paul Walkerand Paul Fitzgerald. (We now begin at 7:30pm sharp! LF).  Next Smokehouse Saturday July 21. Be there! (Editor Needs Games; Please E-mail to lelandf@juno.com)

Pohl Captures Pole! Finishes 1st; Tapia Dominates Lower Section of Smokehouse XVI
Charlotte, NC 6-9-01: Sixteen of the South's most notorious chess players including U.S. Amateur South Champion Gary Newsom  (who will compete tomorrow on-line for the U.S. Amateur Championship title) participated in Smokehouse XVI. In the Top Section, SM Klaus Pohl (2252) from Greenville, S.C. handled countryman Dr. Armin "Hammer" Burghart (2018) in Rd:1 before being slowed by NM Leland "Czar" Fuerstman (2034) in the penultimate round. (See Game 0184)  In the final round Pohl eeked out a win from a R&P ending versus CCC's #1 player NM Frankie Newton (2195) to take clear 1st place with 2.5-.5 winning $80. Equal 2nd-3rd with 2-1 and winning $20 were Newton who defeated Gary Newsom (1975) in Rd:1 and Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1971) in Rd:2 and Fuerstman who defeated Jeff Rayfield (1867) in Rd:1, Drew Pohl (2252) in Rd:2 and agreed to a "Draw by Reputation" to Newsom in the final round. In the Lower Section, newly crowned Class "A" player Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1819) dismantled Randy "King" Hunter (1031), Michael Curcuru (1748) and Robert C. "Bob" Moore (1717) to score 3-0 and take home $80. Second were Moore and Rayfield with 2-1. (Fuerstman directed) Next Smokehouse July 21.  See ya' there!
