NEWS & VIEWS 8-18-05
Wendy's LXIX Begins - $300
Bonus Awaits!
Charlotte, NC 8-17-05: A moderately strong
turnout of 38 of the Metrolina
area's least compulsive gamblers purchased their lottery tickets in the
form of a $3 entry fee in
order to participate in Rd:1 of Wendy's LXIX and take 3 chances of winning $100! Thanks to the generosity of
honorable chess philanthropist SCCA President
James
MacDougall, CCC
members who compete in all 5 rounds will share the $300 gift! In the Top Section, the CCC's #2 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, NM Frankie
"Neutrino" Newton
(2298) AKA
"the Gladiator" pressed the initiative to the very
end but was unable to avoid perpetual check thereby yielding a Draw to Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1989). Meanwhile, NM Leland "Perro Grande" Fuerstman (2003) went ice skating with mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1808) whereby the latter player
slipped and fell first (See Game 0503), while the good Dr.
Gerard "the
Butcher" Sztyber (1842) upset
Expert Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2048). In the "B" Section, Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1777) went the distance and won
the decision versus Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1692), Ken "the not so Terrible" Ivens (1767) disemboweled Paul
"Survivalist" Lucas (1748), Amelia
"Wheels" Wheeless (1640) split
the point with old squarepants, "Sponge" Bob Moore (1700) as did likewise Donald "Trump"
Hofer (1635) with Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1474). In the "C" Section, Kevin "Spacey" Huang (1536) broke the axel of
Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1587), Spencer
"Jazzman" Singleton (1510)
introduced himself to Slava Fedko (Unr), it was David Vs. Goliath
as Samuel "Reshevsky" Xin (1461) (who just returned from a
vacation in China!) upended Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1458), Keith "Sherlock" Holmes (1454) solved the case
against Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1568) and newcomer Neal Salas (Unr) surprised Dave
"Ameen" Eadie (1586). In the Lower
Section, wins were
reported by Copeland Blackwell,
Wei Xin, Chris Kohlhepp, Chang Sun, Corey Frazier and Dyrus Wohr. All
results may be observed on the "Current

Lucas! Takes
Top Honors; Moore, Hudson,
Ozherelyev, Huang
=1st-4th in Lower Section of Bertucci's II
Charlotte NC 8-20-05: A grand
total of 20 chessplayers from hither and
yon travelled to the Queen City in order to participate
in Bertucci's II. (Believe
it or not, Bertucci's Italian Restaurant
is actually better than Billy's! The simi-private
playing area is spacious and well lighted, the traditional Italian
cuisine is delicious, reasonably priced and far more than I could eat,
and the servers and management made us feel very welcome.) In the Top Section, "surprise, surprise,
surprise" was the reaction of many upon learning that Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1748) of Lake Wylie upset
Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1989) in Rd:1,
eviscerated Ken "the not so Terrible" Ivens (1767) in Rd:2 and emasculated Dan "Ski"
Andrzejewski (1749) in Rd:3 to
capture clear 1st Place with 3-0 and take
home $100.
Equal 2nd-3rd were NCCA President NM Neal Harris (2215) of Old Fort and
Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2162) each with 2.5-.5
winning $25.
In the Lower Section, =1st-4th Place was shared by
"Sponge" Bob Moore (1700), Jonathan
"Henry" Hudson (1679), Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1533) and Kevin "Spacey" Huang (1536) each with 2.5-.5
winning $37.50.
