Newton, Tapia Lead Top; F. Mu Middle; Ashamalla Lower Section of Wendy's XXXVII 
Charlotte, NC  8-7-02:  An individual round record tying 44 of the Metrolina area's most fearless chessplayers participated in Rd:4 of Wendy's XXXVII. In the Top Section upsets abound as leader NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2236) was upset by returnee from the U.S. Open Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1949) (See Game 0241) while newly promoted CCC Favorite Son Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2091) outplayed NM John "Night Train" Lane (2091). In addition, because of an unobserved computer glitch, Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1720) again upset NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2021) while Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1798) split the point with NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000). In the Middle Section, leader Frank "Moo" Mu (1628) shared the point with Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1619) to lead with 3.5-.5. Also, in the Middle Section, Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg (1493) sold short vs. "CEO" Mike Isner (1572), Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1485) revolted against Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1657), "Smokin" Brian Fraiser (1661) deported Danesh "the Mad Iranian" Dadgar (1579), Euphemia "Moo" Mu (1500) said a prayer for the good Reverend Bernard "Bman" Baker (1616), scratch golfer Scott "King" Hunter (1727) kicked a field goal over "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1612), Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup (1429) upset Dave "Richman" Richards (1719), Algie "Van" Clyburn (1585) played taps for Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1420) and Randy "I'm not afraid of" Hight (1445) handled Sheila Blackwell (934). In the Lower Section, vying for a $100 bonus!, CCC Player Representative Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1280) outplayed 7 year old phenom Joshua "Moo" Mu (1118) to remain as the lone 4-0in the tournament. Other Lower Section winners were: Winfred "Guns" Gatlin, James "Sticks" Ulaky, Paul "Johnny" Walker, Eric "W-D40" Rust, David "Learch" Adams, Darrell "Wilkes" Booth and George "Lee J" Cobb. Mouzon Sweeps Top; Calloway, Lane, MacDougal Middle; Nevitt, Munnell Lower Section of Smokehouse XIX
Charlotte, NC 7-13-02: Twenty-eight of the most active week-end warriors, including 7 from South Carolina participated in Smokehouse XXIX. In the Top Section, Expert and soon to be Master Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2195) of Charlotte dispatched of Keith Eubanks (2036) of Columbia, SC, NM Leland Fuerstman (2009) and Daniel Tapia (2036) to score a perfect 3-0 and pocket $100. Equal 2nd-4th with 2-1 were NM Joseph Jurjevich (2145), Daniel Tapia (2036) and Chris Mabe (1889) each taking home $17. The Middle Section was controlled by Paul Calloway (1645) of Horse Shoe, NC and "Team Columbia" stars James MacDougall (1560) and Kermon Lane (1458) each scoring 2.5-.5 and winning $50.
