Tapia Wins Top; Dadgar "B"; Chen "C"; Hamilton 5-0 in Lower Section of Wendy's XLVIII
Charlotte, NC 9-10-03: A grand total of 68 of the most competitive calculators in the Metrolina area congregated at this factory of creative thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Wendy's XLVIII. In the Top Section, winning only his first Wendy's Title!, CCC Favorite Son, 2003 NC Scholastic Champion, 17 year old phenom Expert Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2124) defeated Tom "Outamy" Waymouth (1900) to score 4-1 and edge out NM Leland "Jefe" Fuerstman (2031) for clear 1st Place. Fuerstman lost to the CCC's #1 player, 2003 NC State Champion NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2316) each scoring 3.5-1.5.  In addition, mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1829) exited the nearest phone booth and showed the "S" to Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1800). In the "B" Section, Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1670) wrested the point from Ken Ivens (1667) to take clear 1st Place with 4-1. Meanwhile, Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi (1750) lambasted the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1734), Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1714) ambushed Jeremy Davenport (1581) and Michael "the Cabbage" Savage (1700) split the point with "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1681). In the "C" Section, Tim "the Chin" Chen (1474) KOed Clyde "the Glyde" Plyler (1400) to take clear 1st Place with 3.5-.5. In addition, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1518) handled Laura Lee (1387), Kevin Huang (1418) beat Joshua "Moo" Mu (1403), Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1505) bested Ilgin Birsan (1000) and James 'Sticks" Ulaky (1542) vs. Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1625) and Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1410) vs. David "Dipper" Conard (1537) ended peacefully. In the "Lower" Section, newcomer Craig "Xan" Hamilton (1255) collected 5 "Hamiltons" for his perfect 5-0! with a win over Thomas Paradis (1216). Other Lower Section winners were: Tom Chen, Kaled Abdelkefi, Tony "the Tiger" Hicks, Michael "Clint" Easterwood, Sean "the Villain" Villone and Austin "Powers" Scott. Charlotte, NC 8-16-03: Twenty-eight competitors from at least 3 states journied to the Queen City in order to participate in Smokehouse XLII. In the Top Section, CCC Favorite Son, 2003 NC Scholastic Champion, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2124) dispatched of Ken "Beans" Baxter (1900), eeked out a draw versus Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2044) and finally bested Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2029) to score 2.5-.5 and share =1st-2nd Place with underdog Sulia "Brick" Mason (1781) who Drew NM Leland "Boss" Fuerstman (2031), knocked off James "Big" MacDougall (1817) and finally upset Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2044) (See Game 0329). Each took home $75. In the Middle Section, Gil "John" Holmes (1683) reeled off wins against Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi (1720), Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1550) and Ken Ivens (1667) to score 3-0 and pocket $100. Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1 and winning $12.50 each were the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1668), Adam "Jesse" James (1659), Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi (1720) and Ken Ivens (1667). In the Lower Section, newcomer Kert Edward (Unr) scored 3-0 winning $80. Equal 2nd-3rd were Kevin Huang (1409) and Marnzell Hand (1600) each with 2-1 winning $20.
