Wendy's XLVIII Begins
Charlotte,
NC 8-13-03: Forty-four
chessplayers from various origins and walks of life congregated
at this holy shrine of higher thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's in
order to participate in Rd:1 of Wendy's XLVIII. In
the Top Section, NM
Justin
"Dog" Daniel (2215) split the point with NM Daniel "Schlecter"
Liu
(2000) (See Game 0328)
while CCC Favorite Son, current NC Scholastic Champion Expert Daniel
"Johnny" Tapia (2124),(who
just returned from the Denker Tournament of High School champions where
he tied for 2nd-4th
with 4.5-1.5)
made his day versus Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1651), Expert Keith
"Kevin" Eubanks (2044) made minced meat of Brandon Lee (1781) and
NM Leland "Boss" Fuerstman (2021) chopped
down Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi (1720) (See
Game 0330) to each lead with 1-0.
In the "B" Section, Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic
(1703) defeated Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1659), the good Reverend Bernard
"King" Baker (1678) bested Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1657) and Viktor
"the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1541) got by Ken Ivens (1667). In
the "C" Section, Marnzell Hand (1601) did not lend one to
Jeremy Davenport (1550), Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1494) welcomed
newcomer Kert Edward (Unr), Kermon Joel Lane (1540) rousted
Michael "Y" Shoup (1480), Tim "the Chin" Chen (1491) KO'ed
Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1420) and 8 year old phenom Joshua "Moo"
Mu
(1440) defeated CCC Player Representative Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla
(1412). In the Lower Section, wins were posted by: Thomas
Paradis, Copeland Blackwell, Don Norwood, Tania Satterwhite, Kaled Abdelkefi,
Michael Easterwood, Robert Broadbent, Tom Chen, Craig Hamilton and
Sean Langston. All results may be viewed in "Current

competitors from at least 3 states
journied to the Queen City in order to participate in Smokehouse
XLII.
In the Top Section, CCC Favorite Son, 2003 NC Scholastic
Champion, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2124) dispatched
of Ken "Beans" Baxter (1900), eeked out a draw versus Keith "Chuck" Eubanks
(2044) and finally bested Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2029) to score 2.5-.5
and share =1st-2nd Place with underdog Sulia "Brick" Mason
(1781) who
Drew NM Leland "Boss" Fuerstman (2031), knocked off James "Big" MacDougall
(1817) and finally upset Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2044)(See
Game 0329). Each took home $75.
In the Middle Section, Gil "John" Holmes (1683)
reeled off wins against Tarokh "the Oak' Taefi (1720), Viktor "the Mad
Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1550) and Ken Ivens (1667) to score 3-0
and pocket $100.
Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1
and winning $12.50
each were the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1668),
Adam
"Jesse" James (1659), Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi
(1720)
and Ken Ivens (1667). In the Lower Section, newcomer
Kert
Edward (Unr)
scored 3-0
winning $80.
Equal 2nd-3rd were Kevin Huang (1409) and Marnzell Hand (1600)
each with 2-1
winning $20.
