in Lower Section of Wendy's XLVIII
Charlotte,
NC 9-3-03: A moderate
turnout of 42
of the Southern Piedmonts most radical thinkers
journied to this laboratory of chess scientists more commonly known as
Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:4 of Wendy's XLVIII. In
the Top Section, local golf legend and member of the elite
NC Chess Hall of Fame, NM Leland "Jefe" Fuerstman (2031)
employed the Dragon variation of the Sicilian Defense, sacrificed a piece
and ultimately checkmated upstart Michael "See You Are; See You Are You"
Curcuru (2100a)
to lead with 3.5-.5(See
Game 0338). Meanwhile, close on
his heels with 3-1 is CCC Favorite Son, NC Scholastic Champion,
17 year old phenom Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2116) who bested
SC Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2063). In addition, the CCC's #1 player,
current NC State Champion NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2316)
outflanked Patrick "Flanker' McCartney (1924) while
veteran tournament player NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2007) dispatched
of mild mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1829). In the "B" Section,
Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1647) rendered poor
Dave "Richman" Richards (1678) to
lead with 3-1. Meanwhile, Ken Ivens
(1669) vanquished Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1706), Dr. Gerard
"the Butcher" Sztyber (1744) performed a precise surgical procedure
on Kert Edward (Unr) and Michael "the Savage" Savage (1608)
savagely beat the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1684). In the "C"
Section, Clyde "the Glyde" Plyler (1404) deported Viktor
"the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1543) to lead with3-0
(See Game 0339).
Also competing were Jeremy "Dude" Davenport (1553) who handed
Marnzell Hand (1600) a loss, David "Dipper" Conard (1594)
who whipped Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1431), Kaled Abdelkefi (1314)
used his own artillery on Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1420) and Jim "Sticks"
Ulaky
(1571) made peace with Kevin Huang (1416). In the Lower
Section,
vying for the $100 Bonus,
Craig
"Alexander" Hamilton (1255) defeated
CCC Player Representative Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1412) to remain
as the lone 4-0 in the tournament.
Other Lower Section winners were: Thomas Paradis,
Hassan
Hashemloo, Laura Lee, Kevin Blackwell, William Dewbre

XLII.
In the Top Section, CCC Favorite Son, 2003 NC Scholastic
Champion, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2124) dispatched
of Ken "Beans" Baxter (1900), eeked out a draw versus Keith "Chuck" Eubanks
(2044) and finally bested Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2029) to score 2.5-.5
and share =1st-2nd Place with underdog Sulia "Brick" Mason
(1781) who
Drew NM Leland "Boss" Fuerstman (2031), knocked off James "Big" MacDougall
(1817) and finally upset Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2044) (See
Game 0329). Each took home $75.
In the Middle Section, Gil "John" Holmes (1683)
reeled off wins against Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi (1720), Viktor "the Mad
Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1550) and Ken Ivens (1667) to score 3-0
and pocket $100.
Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1
and winning $12.50
each were the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1668),
Adam
"Jesse" James (1659), Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi
(1720)
and Ken Ivens (1667). In the Lower Section, newcomer
Kert
Edward (Unr)
scored 3-0
winning $80.
Equal 2nd-3rd were Kevin Huang (1409) and Marnzell Hand (1600)
