NEWS & VIEWS 9-8-05
Newton, Mabe, Fuerstman Lead Top; Lee "B"; S. Xin "C";
Kohlhepp
Lower Section of Wendy's LXIX - $300
Bonus Still Awaits!
Charlotte, NC 9-7-05: A particularly strong
turnout of 38 of the greater
Charlotte area's most gifted thinkers congregated at this possibly
contaminated chess superdome more commonly
known as Wendy's in
order to participate in Rd:4 of Wendy's LXIX. (Thanks to the
generosity of honorable chess philanthropist SCCA President James
MacDougall, as many as 21 CCC
members
who will have competed in all 5 rounds shall share the $300 gift at a drawing just
prior to the 5th Rd). In
the Top Section, the CCC's #2 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, NM Frankie
"Neutrino" Newton
(2298) AKA "the Gladiator" went to the wire with CCC Favorite Son Expert Chris "the
Babe" Mabe (2162) when with 27 seconds left on his clock, his opponent
tipped his King, each now with 3-1.
Meanwhile, NM Leland "Perro
Grande" Fuerstman (2003)
ditched a Pawn, but recovered it with a superior position and a surprise
conclusion versus Gary "the Nuisance" Newsom (1987) (See Game 0508)
to share the lead with 3-1. In
addition, NM Justin "Dawg" Daniel (2192) made minced meat of
Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1989) (See Game 0509), Expert Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2048) schooled newly crowned
"A" Player "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1821) and Clarke "Kent" Brosi
(1808) split the point with Ken "the not so Terrible" Ivens (1767).
In the "B" Section, 15 year
old phenom Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1777) scored a late round knock-out over Donald "Trump"
Hofer (1635) to lead with 3-1.
Meanwhile, old square pants "Sponge" Bob
Moore (1700) beat down Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1692) and Amelia "Wheels" Wheeless (1638) emasculated Ankit
"Butch" Jivan (1649). In the "C" Section,
despite the fact that he was handily defeated by Keith "Sherlock" Holmes (1454), 9 year old phenom Samuel
"Reshevsky" Xin (1461) still
leads with 3-1.
In addition, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1458) opened all barrels
against Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1568), Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1586) made peace with Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1587), Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1474) beat Chris Yoder
(Unr) and Octavius "0-0" Obey (1497) got by Michael Baker
(1259). In the Lower Section, Chris Kohlhepp (1283) defeated Dyrus "What is it good for" Wuor (1201) to
lead with 4-0
and win Free
Entry to Bertucci's III on September 17. Other Lower Section winners were: Copeland Blackwell, Adam Jaffe, Drexall Shorter and Amanda Braband. All

Lucas! Takes
Top Honors; Moore, Hudson,
Ozherelyev, Huang
=1st-4th in Lower Section of Bertucci's II
Charlotte NC 8-20-05: A grand
total of 20 chessplayers from hither and
yon travelled to the Queen City in order to participate
in Bertucci's II. (Believe
it or not, Bertucci's Italian Restaurant
is actually better than Billy's! The simi-private
playing area is spacious and well lighted, the traditional Italian
cuisine is delicious, reasonably priced and far more than I could eat,
and the servers and management made us feel very welcome.) In the Top Section, "surprise, surprise,
surprise" was the reaction of many upon learning that Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1748) of Lake Wylie upset
Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1989) in Rd:1,
eviscerated Ken "the not so Terrible" Ivens (1767) in Rd:2 and emasculated Dan "Ski"
Andrzejewski (1749) in Rd:3 to
capture clear 1st Place with 3-0 and take
home $100.
Equal 2nd-3rd were NCCA President NM Neal Harris (2215) of Old Fort and
Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2162) each with 2.5-.5
winning $25.
In the Lower Section, =1st-4th Place was shared by
"Sponge" Bob Moore (1700), Jonathan
"Henry" Hudson (1679), Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1533) and Kevin "Spacey" Huang (1536) each with 2.5-.5
winning $37.50.
