NEWS & VIEWS 8-25-05
Mabe Leads Top; Lee "B"; S. Xin "C"; Kohlhepp, Wuor, W. Xin
Lower Section of Wendy's LXIX - $300
Bonus Awaits!
Charlotte, NC 8-24-05: A healthy turnout of 36 of the greater Charlotte
area's most competitive mental jousters reported to this assembly plant
where chess positions are created more commonly known as Wendy's in
order to participate in Rd:2
of Wendy's LXIX. (Thanks to the
generosity of honorable chess philanthropist SCCA President James
MacDougall, CCC members
who compete in all 5 rounds will share the $300 gift at a drawing just
prior to the 5th Rd). In
the Top Section, predicting that he would be
paired with NM L. Fuerstman, just prior to the round, Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2162) was observed conspiring
with local chess legend NM J Daniel who encouraged him to play an
obscure Queen sac line from a King's Indian Defense which Tal had made
famous years ago! Incredibly, like the predictable programmed robot
that he is, NM Leland "Perro Grande" Fuerstman (2003) clicked
off every move as expected!! (See Game 0504) {I rarely play 1 d4... Dude, it
was like the twilight zone}. Extraordinary effort by Mabe! who leads with 2-0.
Meanwhile, the CCC's #2 player, the pride of Crouse, NC, NM Frankie "Schlecter" Newton (2298) AKA "the Drawing
Master" passively tapped his opponent, returnee to
CCC competition NM Justin
"Dawg" Daniel (2192) with a
velvet glove and agreed to Draw
after 13 moves!, Patrick "Flanker"
McCartney (1989)
clobbered Michael "Jordan"
Kliber (1907) (See Game 0506), Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2048) defeated the good
Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1868) unofficial "A" Players "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1810) and mild
mannered Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1808) joined the mutual
admiration society. In the "B" Section,
Laura "Karate Kid"
Lee (1777) KOed Ken "the not so Terrible" Ivens (1767) to lead with 2-0. In
addition, Amelia "Wheels" Wheeless (1640) drowned in the Jonathan "Henry" Hudson (1692) river, Marty "Fritz" Katz (1745) needed a sponge to clean
up the square pants of "Sponge" Bob Moore (1700), Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1649) beat down Keith
"Sherlock" Holmes (1454) and Viktor
"the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev
(1568) fired Donald "Trump" Hofer (1635). In the "C" Section, (former student of NM L Fuerstman) 9 year old chess
phenom Samuel
"Reshevsky" Xin (1461)
outplayed Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (1474) to lead with 2-0.
Meanwhile, Colette "Wheels" Wheeless (1587) rolled over Spencer
"Jazzman" Singleton (1510) and Dave
"Ameen" Eadie (1586) rendered
obsolete Winfred "Guns" Gatlin. In the Lower
Section, Dyrus "what is it good for" Wuor, Chris Kohlhepp and Wei Xin each have 2-0. All
results may be observed on the "Current

=1st-4th in Lower Section of Bertucci's II
Charlotte NC 8-20-05: A grand
total of 20 chessplayers from hither and
yon travelled to the Queen City in order to participate
in Bertucci's II. (Believe
it or not, Bertucci's Italian Restaurant
is actually better than Billy's! The simi-private
playing area is spacious and well lighted, the traditional Italian
cuisine is delicious, reasonably priced and far more than I could eat,
and the servers and management made us feel very welcome.) In the Top Section, "surprise, surprise,
surprise" was the reaction of many upon learning that Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1748) of Lake Wylie upset
Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (1989) in Rd:1,
eviscerated Ken "the not so Terrible" Ivens (1767) in Rd:2 and emasculated Dan "Ski"
Andrzejewski (1749) in Rd:3 to
capture clear 1st Place with 3-0 and take
home $100.
Equal 2nd-3rd were NCCA President NM Neal Harris (2215) of Old Fort and
Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (2162) each with 2.5-.5
winning $25.
In the Lower Section, =1st-4th Place was shared by
"Sponge" Bob Moore (1700), Jonathan
"Henry" Hudson (1679), Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1533) and Kevin "Spacey" Huang (1536) each with 2.5-.5
winning $37.50.
