CCC NEWS &VIEWS 5-11-00
By NM Leland Fuerstman

Fuerstman Surges to Front; Sinanovic, Spencer & Millsaps Vie for Title in Middle; Clavijo, Christopher & Roman in Lower Section of Wendy's XIV

Twenty-eight of the greater Charlotte area's most distinguished thinkers, sans distinguished thinker CCC Favorite Son 16 year old phenom Justin Daniel (2026) who actually forwent playing chess in order to study for tests!? (I mean, like where are your priorities, dude?...I assume properly placed, since Justin has already been accepted to MIT! LF) converged upon our hallowed temple of chess more commonly known as Wendys in order to complete in Rd:4 of Wendy's XIV.  In the Top Section, now leading with 3 points, NM Leland Fuerstman (2073) found himself in a relatively equal middlegame versus Jon "Infinity's End & Cigar Etc" Pietras (1745) when suddenly the latter player executed a help-mate upon himself. (See Game 0113)  Also in the Top Section,  NM "WWF" Frankie Newton (2202) eeked out a pawn up K & P ending against Gary Newsom (1909) while with the Black pieces, David "Kamikaze" Jaap's (1809) suicide bombing mission versus Patrick "the Drawing Amateur" McCartney (1873) first net him the exchange, and finally the game. (See Game 0114)  In the Cruiserweight Division, real estate tycoon Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1552)! perpetrated a significant upset by earning a well deserved draw against NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000).  (See Game 0115)  In the Middle Section, leaders Slobodan Sinanovic (1415) and Darrell Spencer (1399) played a rather lively game which ended in draw while with the Black pieces, "Iron" Mike Isner (1435) squeezed out a win against Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1323).  In the Lower Section, leader Helton Clavijo (1289) took a spill against Samuel Christopher (1067)  while now with 3 points, David Roman (1366) kept pace with a nice win over Timothy Ruffin (1219). Other Lower Section winners were: Brandon Brown, Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup, Matthew Banbury, Stanley Mack and Jon Meyer.
All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." A warm welcome to new CCC members Stanley Mack and Matthew Banbury. See ya' Saturday, May 13 at Smokehouse IV...LF

Newton Vanquishes Field; D. Spencer Conquers Lower Section In Smokehouse IV
Eighteen chess energumens (including 4 certified chessmasters) neglected mowing their lawns or even spending time with their families at the lake and instead chose to participate in an organized chess competition: Smokehouse IVIn the Top Section, recently crowned National Master "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2202) asked no quarter and yielded none as he scored a perfect 3-0  defeating NM Klaus Pohl (2222) (from Greenville, S.C.) in the ultimate round to take home $100 cash.  Clear 2nd Place was captured by a relentless NM Daniel Liu (2007) who scored 2.5-.5 winning $50 after a lively Rd:3 encounter with NM Leland Fuerstman (2053) which ended in the last minute of the sudden death time control. In the Lower Section, Darrell Spencer (1399) outdistanced the field with 2.5-.5 taking home $80.  Equal 2nd-3rd were Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1554) and Jim Ulaky (1100) each pocketing $20. The next CCC Saturday 3 rounder,  Smokehouse V, is scheduled for June 3, 00. See ya' there! LF
