Taefi Takes Early Lead in Wendy's VIII
Thirty of
the most creative thinkers in the "Greater Charlotte" area assembled
at the Charlotte Chess Club Wednesday evening seeking fame and glory. In
the Top Section, surprisingly, after two rounds, Tarokh
Taefi (1745),
improved upon his Rd:1 upset of NM Leland Fuerstman as he repeated that
same "magic trick" with a timely piece sac win over "upstart" Justin
Daniel (1921) (See game 0067) .
Only Expert Frankie Newton (2155) or NM Daniel Liu (2001) who stands a
Pawn up in their adjournment can equal his score. Also in the Top
Section, NM Leland Fuerstman (2014) defeated CCC Internal
Affairs Committee Chairman Paul F. Lucas (1668) with an "ancient book trap"
(1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6 3 Nc3 d5 4 Bg5 Ne4 5 Bf4 Nc3 6 bc dc 7 e3 b5 8 a4
c6 9 ab cb? 10 Qf3!!+- and White won on move 29) while Patrick McCartney
(1763) could only manage a Draw against David "the Bear" Griffin (1704).
In the Middle Section, CCC Website Advisor Carl McKern
(1500) stayed perfect after his win over Mike Isner (1485) while newcomer
Darrell Spencer (Unr) edged out Doug "REman" Millsaps (1631).
In addition, shuttleman Paul Calloway (1701) defeated Ian Morton.
In the Lower Section, Joseph Feiler's (1098) win over
Kevin Smith (Unr) makes him the only 2-0! in the section. Other Lower
Section winners were David Roman, Tim Ruffin, Joe Shirlen, Don
Norwood, Brandon Brown & Terry Brown! See all results
in Current Crosstable.
Newton Prevails Again In Midtown XXIII
Expert
(and soon to be Master) William F. "Frankie" Newton II (2155)
vowed not to take any "quick draws" the night
before, but changed his mind at the last moment by issuing NM Daniel Liu
a Rd:2 gratuity in order to save energy for his final round encounter with
Expert Robert Spurrier. As it turned out, his strategy proved correct
sending the Local Champion back to Lincolnton with $80 cash. Finishing
=2nd-4th were NM Leland Fuerstman (2018), NM Daniel Liu
(2001) and Todd Trower (1887) each with 2-1 winning $13.33.
The Lower Section was dominated by Paul Jenkins (1505)
with a perfect 3-0 winning $80. Five players tied for 2nd-6th with
2-1: Graydon Eggers, Sam Christopher, Lee Richardson, Pete Danker
and Michael Brown winning $8. each.

We Were Wrong!?!
A few weeks ago, it was reported that Expert Frankie Newton
had "probably" attained the necessary rating points required (2200) for
the title of National Master. However, to date, his highest
published rating is 2177. Though his rating has slipped a bit in
recent times, this author is certain that the day for official celebration
will come, soon. Go get 'em, Frankie!!

Newton Clear
1st In Fake Copper Blanket; T. Brown Sweeps Lower Section!
Team Charlotte kicked butt again last weekend
as Expert Frankie Newton (2155) crusied
into clear 1st Place with a final round Draw against Dr. Kenneth Ashkin
(2020) to score 3.5-.5 and bring home "the bacon." In the Lower Section,
CCC Legal Advisor Terry Brown, Esq. (835) vowed
to make "no mistakes" and won 4 consecutive games! to take clear 1st Place.
Congrats, guys. Bring back those rating points!!
