and welcome to the Charlotte Chess Club website. On this page, which is
continuously updated, we will report a weekly synopsis of the previous
meeting to include current standings, annotated games, and other
interesting anecdotes for your reading, viewing, and listening

Begins; Upsets Abound! - Newton's Streak Ends; Top Section Pays $200!

Charlotte, NC 12-20-06:
A "new facility" record
crowd of 30 of the strongest
chessplayers in the Metrolina area converged upon this grand ballroom more
commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in the final chess
event of the year. Prior to the
round, the 2006 Players of the
Year were announced. In order to qualify, players must have
participated in at least 6
CCC events and played at least 24
games. Player of the Year
was determined by most CCC Titles earned in 2006. Greatest annual
rating increase determined the winners of other sections. |

In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player and
North Carolina's highest rated player, FM Andrey "the Giant" Chumachenko (2470) met stiff
resistance from Gary "Night Crawler" Newsom (1952) but ultimately
converted his slight spacial advantage into a win. Meanwhile,
the CCC's #2 player,
the pride of Crouse, NC, 2006
CCC Player of the Year NM Frankie "Neutrino" Newton
(2287) {who
lost a game on March 19 to FM Andrey Chumachenko (2470) in Rd:3 of the
US Masters and then played 33
games without a single loss,} was summarily upset by 17
year old rising star Matthew
"Juggernaut" Green (1915) who
simply outplayed the Master, with the Black pieces, no less! (See Game 0579)
In
addition, Expert Chris "the
Babe" Mabe (2114) survived a
difficult struggle with Jamie McGavran (1903), Michael "Bolton" Kliber (1900) clobbered Expert Todd
"Squirrelbreath" Trower (2099), NM Leland
"Ennui" Fuerstman (2016)
upset 2006 CCC Class "B" Player
of the Year Kevin "Spacey"
Huang (1841) (See Game 0578) and Bobby "Duck" Waddell (1806) crushed Expert
Patrick "Fabio" McCartney (2016) each leading with 1-0.
Meanwhile, NM John "Night
Train" Lane (2085) was
welcomed back to CCC competition by Laura
"Karate Kid" Lee (1831) who,
after a wild middlegame, first sacrificed a piece and then a Rook to
force a Draw! In the "B" Section,
Scott "Eagle" Baldwin (1791) entertained "Iron"
Mike Eberhardinger (1702) and Viktor
"the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev
(1636) beat down Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1768) each
leading with 1-0.
In addition, 2006 CCC Class
"C" Player of the Year Samuel "Xman" Xin (1754) made peace with Amelia "Wheels" Wheeless (1660) while
Jerome "Cookie
Monster" DeBell (1674) split the point with Melvin "Isaac" Hayes (1511) (who
said he "first played in the CCC at Spirit Square in 1973!") In
the Lower Section, wins were submitted by Cesar "Read me my
rights" Miranda, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin and Fran "Arnie" Palmer. All

Newsom Perfect in Bertucci's XVII
Charlotte NC 12-16-06: A grand total of 8 of the finest
chessplayers in the Metrolina area participated in the CCC's final Bertucci's event of the year.
(Next year, only 6
Bertucci's events are scheduled). In the Top Section,
Gary "NightCrawler"
Newsom (1952) dispatched of Fran "Arnie" Palmer (1162), Dave
"Greedy" Eadie (1578) and finally Expert Patrick "Fabio" McCartney
(2016) to capture clear 1st Place
with 3-0
and pocket $80.
Equal 2nd-3rd with 2-1 were
Expert Shawn "Arlo" Pealer (2111) and McCartney each with 2-1 and
winning $20.
