CCC NEWS & VIEWS 1-22-04
 By NM Leland Fuerstman
Newton Leads Top; Dadgar "B"; Plyler, Chen "C"; Sethuraman Lower Section of Wendy's LII
Charlotte, NC 1-21-04:  A particularly strong turnout of 42 of the Metrolina area's most ardent Panthers fans arrived at this stadium of mental combatants("where brains rather than brawn are tested; I mean, let's face it, the weakest player in the Charlotte Chess Club could probably checkmate any Panther") more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:4 of Wendy's LII. In the Top Section, "you can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him" as the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitzin" Newton (2246) edged one  half point ahead of the field with a decisive victory over Patrick "Sour-Grapes" McCartney (1997) to lead with 2.5-1.5. Meanwhile, rising star Michael "See You Are; See You Are You" Curcuru (2022) clobbered Michael "Jackson" Kliber (1900) and Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1963) beat down the good Revered Bernard "King" Baker (1851). In addition, Draws were submitted by CCC Favorite Son, repeat NC Scholastic Champion, 17 year old phenom Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2160) versus veteran NC champion NM Daniel "Schlechter" Liu (2040)(See Game 0373), Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1801) versus Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (1982) and Danesh "DD" Dadgar! (1712) who requested, and was granted the honor of playing NM Leland "Schlechter" Fuerstman (2012). In the "B" Section, Dadgar remains a full point ahead of the field with 3.5-.5.(0374 Dadgar-Fuerstman) (Go Danesh!)Meanwhile, Ken "the not so Terrible" Ivens (1744) schooled Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1649), Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi (1737) manhandled Jeremy "Irons" Davenport (1577), Kaled "the Alphabet" Abdelkefi (1525) upset Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1632), Kert "the Oracle" Edward (1497) placed the head of Jim" Sticks" Ulaky (1607) between two symbols and recent 1st Place winner of the "2004 Warshauer Memorial,"Michael "the Savage" Savage (1643) split the point with Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1667). In the "C" Section, Clyde "the Glyde" Plyler (1503) got by Bob "Marv" Albert (1400) and Tom "the Twin" Chen (1491) defeated Ilgin "the Mad Turk" Birsan (1400) to each lead with 2.5-.5. In addition, friendly visitor from Atlanta Richard Pugh III (1456) snared the point from Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1460), Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn (1500) put a hard tackle on Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1541) and Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1501) made peace with David "Dipper" Conard (1597). In the Lower Section, commuting each week from Columbia, S.C., upstart Vijay "Singh" Sethuraman (1377) (whom, because of rating results which have not been reported by some delinquent director, so he still has this ridiculously low rating!) bested one of our strongest young tyros, Tim "the Twin" Chen (1591) to lead with 3-0. Other Lower Section winners were: Marty "Felix" Katz and Doyle Dewbre. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." Visit the CCC Message Board and speak to us!! Next Smokehouse Saturday, 2-21. Be there! Editor Needs Games; Please E-mail to: lelandfue@yahoo.com
Eubanks Takes Top; Davenport, Edward Middle; Eadie, Fastovets Lower Section of Smokehouse XLVII
Charlotte, NC 1-17-04:  A grand total of 33 rabid competitors from North and South Carolina,  constituting the "second largest" turnout in Smokehouse history, journied to the Queen City in order to participate in Smokehouse XLVII. In the Top Section, S.C. Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2090) registered victories over the good Reverned Bernard "King" Baker (1851), Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1963) and Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (1982) to capture clear 1st Place with 3-0 and pocket $100. Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1 were NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2040), NM Leland "El-Jefe" Fuerstman (2012), Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1963) and Michael "the Savage" Savage (1643) each winning $12.50. In the Middle Section, =1st-2nd Place was shared jointly by Jeremy "Irons" Davenport (1577) and Kert "the Oracle" Edward (1497) each with 2.5-.5 and winning $75. In the Lower Section, =1st-2nd Place was taken by Dave "T-Bone" Eadie (Unr) and Serguei "Rasputin" Fastovets (Unr) each with 2.5-.5 winning $75. Newton, Tapia Share Top Honors; Villone Wins Lower Section of Pepperoni's II (Quick Ratings Tournament)
Charlotte, NC 12-15-03:  A cheerful crowd of 19 of the Metrolina area's hungriest pizza eating and beer drinking chessplayers converged upon Pepperoni's on Monday evening in order to participate in Pepperoni's II. This slightly less formal 3 round, G-29 event was preceeded by a meeting whereby the "new" CCC T-Shirts (now on sale for $20!) were presented to various club Champions. In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2004) dispatched of Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (1703), split the point with co-winner, CCC Favorite Son Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1517) and finally defeated SC Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (1913). Tapia clobbered Michael "Jackson" Kliber (1982), drew Newton and bested Gary "the Nuisance" Newsom (1983) to each score 2.5-.5 and pocket $30. To view NM Leland Fuerstman's (2089) miniature vs. Dino PeBenito (Unr) (See Game 0360). In the Lower Section, Sean "the Villain" Villone (1059)clicked off wins against the good Reverend James McKinley Williams (Unr), Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn (Unr) and Todd Essex (Unr) to score 3-0 and win $30. Equal 2nd-5th were James "Sticks" Ulaky (Unr), Todd Essex (Unr), Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn and Randy "I'm not afraid of" Hight (1510) each with 2-1 winning $5. (A great time was had by all! Many thanks to Gary Newsom for his excellent hospitality, and delicious pizza! We will do this again soon). To view complete crosstable "Click Here". (Fuerstman Directed)
