NEWS & VIEWS 1-29-04
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Newton, Tapia, Liu, Fuerstman Share Top Honors;
Dadgar "B"; Chen "C"; Sethuraman Lower Section of Wendy's LII
Charlotte,
NC 1-28-04: Dressed
in Panther garb, a grand total of 55
of the most active chess players from the southern piedmont area
arrived at this arena of cerebral competition more commonly known as Wendy's
in order to participate in Wendy's LII. In
the Top Section, capturing his unprecedented 33rd
Wendy's
Title,
the CCC's #1 player, NM
Frankie "Blitzin" Newton (2246) finished
=1st-4th
Place with 3-2
after yielding a hard fought Draw to Chris "the Babe" Mabe
(1963). Meanwhile, winning his 2nd Wendy's
Title,
repeat NC Scholastic Champion, CCC Favorite Son, 17
year old phenom, Daniel "Johnny Tapia (2160) went 3-2
after he emerged victorious over Expert Michael "See You Are; See You Are
You" Curcuru (2054). Capturing his 3rd
Wendy's
Title,
NM Daniel "Deep"
Liu (2040)
outflanked Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1997) to score 3-2
while NM Leland "El-Jefe" Fuerstman's (2012) 3-2
secured
his 14th Wendy's
Title
after an improbable OCB victory over Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1802).
In addition, a significant upset was witnessed as the Good Reverend Bernard
"King" Baker (1851) checkmated S.C. Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks
(2090) (See Game 0377)while
Frank
"Moo" Mu (1823) beat down Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan (1667). In
the Middle Section, {with time running out, it appeared
to me as if "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1708) had a slight edge over
section leader Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1712), but regardless
of the outcome}, Dadger wins the section with at least 3.5-1.5! In
addition, Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi (1730) split the point with
Michael
"the Savage" Savage (1640) as did Ankit "Butch"
Jivan
(1649) with Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1601). In the "C"
Section, Tom "the Twin" Chen (1491) performed an exorcism
on Kert "the Oracle" Edward (1597) to win 1st Place with
3.5-.5. Meanwhile, Jeremy "Irons"
Davenport
(1592) ofor'd Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1632) and Winfred
"Guns" Gatlin (1571) hung tough to defeat upstart Tim "the Twin"
Chen (1591). In
the Lower Section, commuting each week from Columbia, SC,
Vijay
"Singh" Sethuraman (1377?) birdied the last 4 holes on Todd "E-sex"
Essex (1227) to take clear 1st Place with 4-0!
Other Lower Section winners were: Joshua "Moo" Mu,
Shawn
"Penn" Claitt and Austin "Powers" Scott.
All
results may be viewed in
"Current Crosstable."
