Mouzon Takes Lead in Top; Gordon, Richards Middle; McLaughlin, Hashemloo Lower Section of Wendy's XXXIX
Charlotte, NC  10-2-02:  A moderate gathering of 28 of the Charlotte area's most ambitious calculators converged upon our sacred temple of thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:2 of Wendy's XXXIX. In the Top Section, NM Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2215) slew the Dragon which had been unleashed by NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2000) to lead with 2-0. Meanwhile, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2226) bounced back with a nice win versus Keith Eubanks (1996) (See Game 0256) while Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1976) out smoked Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1780). In the Middle Section, Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1635) upended Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1750) to share the lead at 2-0 with David "RichMan" Richards (1701) who displaced Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1556). In addition, Dr. Gerard "the Mad Pole" Sztyber (1626) performed an emergency procedure on Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1776), the good reverend Bernard "Jim" Baker (1615) K.O.ed "Smokin" Brian Fraiser (1655), Frank "Moo" Mu (1708) edged out Michael "Y" Shoup (1451) and Algie "Van" Clyburn (1400) split the point with Danesh "The Mad Iranian" Dadgar (1637). In the Welterweight Division, Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1397) (See Game 0258) shot down CCC Player Representative Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1404). In the Lower Section, Hassan Hashemloo beat down Todd Essex while Duncan McLaughlin bested Russell Orr to each lead with 2-0. Other Lower Section winners were: Kevin Blackwell and Joe Shirlen. All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable." All welcome new CCC member Tony Hicks. Visit the "new" CCC Message Board speak to us!! Fuerstman, McCartney Share Top Honors in Smokehouse XXXI
Charlotte, NC 9-21-02:
A reasonably strong turnout of 31 of the most gregarious chessplayers from at least 3 different states participated in Wendy's XXXI. In the Top Section, which was noticably absent of most of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated that the fear of losing was the reason) NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2000) won a pretty pawn up OCB ending versus David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1829) (See Game 0254) and survived a lively Sicilian style skirmish against Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1836) before agreeing to a quick GM draw with co-winner Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1979). McCartney bested Jean Phillippe Smits (1750) and Keith Eubanks (1996) to score 2.5-.5 and pocket $75. The Middle Section witnessed some intricate surgery performed by Dr. Gerard Sztyber (1626) who scored a perfect 3-0 and took home $100. Clear 2nd Place was taken by Kwadwo Achempong (Unr) who scored 2.5-.5 and won $50. In the Lower Section, "Prince" Albert Roland (1247) scored a perfect 3-0 and for his efforts received $100. Clear 2nd Place was captured by Lee Nevitt (1109) {who has gained over 600 rating points! in the last 8 months and in this event defeated upstart Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1776)}to score 2.5-.5 and take home $50.
