Fuerstman Stops Runaway Train! Wendy's XXXIX Begins
Charlotte, NC  9-25-02:  A particilarly light  turnout of only 25 of the Metrolina area's most gifted thinkers converged upon this factory of tacticians more commonly known as Wendy's to participate in Rd:1 of Wendy's XXXIX. In the Top Section, with the Black pieces, NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2000) finally halted the  impressive winning streak of the CCC's #1 active player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2226) (See Game 0255)while NM Harold "Wyn" Mouzon (2215) outflanked Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1979). In the Middle Section, Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1556) organized a firing squad for Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg (1553), Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1635) deported Danesh "Ayatollah" Dadgar (1637), Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1750) excommunicated the good Reverend Bernard "Jim" Baker (1615), Dave "RichMan" Richards (1701) bought out Frank "Moo" Mu (1708) and Michael "Y" Shoup (1451) split the point with Dr. Gerard "the Mad Pole" Sztyber (1626). In the Lower Section, wins were posted by Winfred "Guns" Gatlin, Daryl "Wilkes" Booth, Todd Essex, Eric "WD-40" Rust and Hassan Hashemloo. All results may be viewed in the "Current Crosstable." Fuerstman, McCartney Share Top Honors in Smokehouse XXXI
Charlotte, NC 9-21-02:
A reasonably strong turnout of 31 of the most gregarious chessplayers from at least 3 different states participated in Wendy's XXXI. In the Top Section, which was noticably absent of most of Charlotte's top players, (some speculated that the fear of losing was the reason) NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2000) won a pretty pawn up OCB ending versus David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1829) (See Game 0254) and survived a lively Sicilian style skirmish against Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1836) before agreeing to a quick GM draw with co-winner Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1979). McCartney bested Jean Phillippe Smits (1750) and Keith Eubanks (1996) to score 2.5-.5 and pocket $75. The Middle Section witnessed some intricate surgery performed by Dr. Gerard Sztyber (1626) who scored a perfect 3-0 and took home $100. Clear 2nd Place was taken by Kwadwo Achempong (Unr) who scored 2.5-.5 and won $50. In the Lower Section, "Prince" Albert Roland (1247) scored a perfect 3-0 and for his efforts received $100. Clear 2nd Place was captured by Lee Nevitt (1109) {who has gained over 600 rating points! in the last 8 months and in this event defeated upstart Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1776)}to score 2.5-.5 and take home $50.
