CCC NEWS &VIEWS 11-09-00
By NM Leland Fuerstman

Newton, Fuerstman Share Top Honors; Millsaps Wins Middle; B.Brown Lower Section of Wendy's XIX.  (Bonus now $300!)

A grand total of fourty-nine concerned citizens first cast their vote for President (We should know who the winner is in a week or two!?!) stayed up all night, and then competed in the ultimate round of Wendy's XIXIn the Top Section, leader NM Frankie "the Neutron Bomb" Newton (2236) yielded a quick Draw to CCC Favorite Son 16 year old Expert Justin Daniel (2106) allowing NM Leland Fuerstman (2027) who posted a difficult win over Jon "Infinity's End & Cigars Etc" Pietras (1824) to tie for First Place with 3 points.(See Game 0149)  (However, in order to observe Pietras' recent encounter with Eugene Davenport (See Game 0151) Also, in the Top Section, with the Black pieces, NM Garik "Outlaw" Wells (2106) defeated NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) while Patrick McCartney (1900) handled Gregory "the Mad Ukrainian" Bunich (1724). Entering the final round, only one Middle Section player, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1642) had achieved a perfect 4-0! score.  A Rd:5 win would have earned him a bonus of $200. Unfortunately, Paul "Shuttleman" Calloway (1666) upset the good stockbroker with his patented "Smith-Morra Gambit" to stop the streak. (See Game 0150)  Also, in the Middle Section, Robert Eaman (1546) handled Donald "Sky" Hofer (1500), Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1444) upset D. Paul Jenkins (1562), Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1400) took care of David Mangis (1452) and Carl McKern (1500) defeated Jerome "Bigguy" DeBell (1456). In the Lower Section, both leaders, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1274) and Derek Smith (1283) faultered in the final round against Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1328) and Brandon Brown (1303) respectively allowing the latter player to take clear First Place with 4-1. Also, in the Lower Section, wins were posted by Eric Melton, Lee "R&Bman" Richardson, Adam Clontz, Randy Hunter, Don Norwood and Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup.
All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."

Pohl Perfect in Top; DeBell and Tapia Share Honors in Middle Section of Smokehouse VIII

Thirteen weekend warriors participated in Smokehouse VIII on Saturday, September 30. In the Top Section SM Klaus Pohl (2210) from Greenville, S.C. asserted his superiority by clicking off successive wins against Paul Calloway (1675), NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2236) and Patrick McCartney (1900) to take clear First Place and collect $80. Equal 2nd-5th were NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II, Patrick McCartney and Jon Pietras each winning $13.33.  In the Lower Section, Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1421) struck again with wins over Mike Lipkin (1540) and Sam Christopher (1050) and a Rd:2 Draw against Jerome "BigGuy" DeBell (1540).  DeBell defeated Sam Christopher (1050) and Don Norwood (800). Each took home $37.50. Fuerstman directed.
