 By NM Leland Fuerstman
Newton, Waymouth Lead Top; Gridlock in "B"; Singleton, Lee "C"; Claitt, Nichols Lower Section of Wendy's LIII
Charlotte, NC 2-11-04: A rather moderate turnout of 32 of the most active mental jousters from the Metrolina area ignored their exhaustion from the previous weekend at LotS and participated in Rd:2 of Wendy's LIII. In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitzin" Newton (2263) outplayed Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1974) (See Game 0379) to grab a share of the lead with Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (2002) who smoked Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1802) each now with 1.5-.5. Meanwhile, Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2029) emerged victorious over Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1721), veteran N.C. icon NM Daniel "Schlechter" Liu (2039) yielded a Draw to the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1805) and member of the N.C. Chess Hall of Fame NM Leland "El-Jefe" Fuerstman (2016) made peace with Michael "See You Are; See You Are You" Curcuru (2083) (See Game 0380)(who seems to be recovering quite well after a nasty spill at LotS where he was actually knocked unconscious for 8 minutes!? Rumor has it that he's suing the hotel for millions!!). In the "B" Section, Viktor "the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1632) beat down upstart Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1647), "Gum-foil" Mike Eberhardinger (1723) was upset by newcomer Dave "Ameen" Eadie (1630) and Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1607) was riddled by Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1510). In the "C" Section, Spencer "Jazzman" Singleton (1501) played taps for Clyde "the Glyde" Plyler (1503) while Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1460) debunked Kert "the Oracle" Edward (1497) to each lead with 2-0. In addition, Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn (1502) gave a warm CCC Draw to newcomer Patrick McGann (1140). In the Lower Section, Shawn "Penn" Claitt (1269) got by "Spencer" Tracy Davenport (586) while Ervon "Wooden" Nichols (Unr) bested Don "Scott" Norwood (972) to each lead with 2-0. Other Lower Section winners were: Ilgin "the Mad Turk" Birsan and Bob "Lev" Albert. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable." Visit the CCC Message Board and speak to us!! All welcome new member Patrick McGann. (Good Luck to Michael "the Savage"Savage who is on his way to Russia to participate in a chess symposium. Sources close to Savage report that he may defect?!) Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2090) registered victories over the good Reverned Bernard "King" Baker (1851), Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1963) and Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (1982) to capture clear 1st Place with 3-0 and pocket $100. Newton, Tapia Share Top Honors; Villone Wins Lower Section of Pepperoni's II (Quick Ratings Tournament)
Charlotte, NC 12-15-03:  A cheerful crowd of 19 of the Metrolina area's hungriest pizza eating and beer drinking chessplayers converged upon Pepperoni's on Monday evening in order to participate in Pepperoni's II. This slightly less formal 3 round, G-29 event was preceeded by a meeting whereby the "new" CCC T-Shirts (now on sale for $20!) were presented to various club Champions. In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2004) dispatched of Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (1703), split the point with co-winner, CCC Favorite Son Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1517) and finally defeated SC Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (1913). Tapia clobbered Michael "Jackson" Kliber (1982), drew Newton and bested Gary "the Nuisance" Newsom (1983) to each score 2.5-.5 and pocket $30. To view NM Leland Fuerstman's (2089) miniature vs. Dino PeBenito (Unr) (See Game 0360). In the Lower Section, Sean "the Villain" Villone (1059)clicked off wins against the good Reverend James McKinley Williams (Unr), Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn (Unr) and Todd Essex (Unr) to score 3-0 and win $30. Equal 2nd-5th were James "Sticks" Ulaky (Unr), Todd Essex (Unr), Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn and Randy "I'm not afraid of" Hight (1510) each with 2-1 winning $5. (A great time was had by all!
