Newton, Waymouth Lead Top; Gridlock in "B"; Singleton,
Lee "C"; Claitt, Nichols Lower Section of Wendy's LIII
Charlotte,
NC 2-11-04: A rather moderate turnout of 32
of the most active mental jousters from the Metrolina area ignored
their exhaustion from the previous weekend at LotS and participated
in Rd:2 of Wendy's LIII. In the Top Section, the
CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitzin" Newton (2263) outplayed
Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1974) (See
Game 0379) to grab a share of the lead with Tom
"Terrific"
Waymouth (2002)
who smoked Jon "Cigars" Pietras (1802) each now with 1.5-.5.
Meanwhile, Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (2029) emerged victorious
over Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1721),
veteran N.C. icon NM Daniel "Schlechter" Liu (2039) yielded
a Draw to the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1805) and
member of the N.C. Chess Hall of Fame NM Leland "El-Jefe" Fuerstman
(2016) made peace with Michael "See You Are; See You Are You" Curcuru
(2083) (See
Game 0380)(who
seems to be recovering quite well after a nasty spill at LotS where he
was actually knocked unconscious for 8 minutes!? Rumor has it that he's
suing the hotel for millions!!). In the "B" Section, Viktor
"the Mad Russian" Ozherelyev (1632) beat down upstart Ankit "Butch"
Jivan (1647), "Gum-foil" Mike Eberhardinger (1723) was upset by newcomer
Dave
"Ameen" Eadie (1630) and Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1607) was riddled by
Winfred
"Guns" Gatlin (1510). In the "C" Section,
Spencer
"Jazzman" Singleton (1501) played taps for Clyde "the Glyde"
Plyler (1503) while Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1460) debunked
Kert "the Oracle" Edward (1497) to each lead with 2-0.
In addition, Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn (1502) gave a warm
CCC Draw to newcomer Patrick McGann (1140). In the Lower Section,
Shawn
"Penn" Claitt (1269) got by "Spencer" Tracy Davenport (586) while
Ervon
"Wooden" Nichols (Unr) bested Don "Scott" Norwood (972) to each
lead with 2-0. Other Lower
Section

grand total of 33 rabid
competitors from North and South Carolina, constituting the "second
largest" turnout in Smokehouse history,
journied to the Queen City in order to participate in Smokehouse
XLVII.
In the Top Section, S.C. Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks
(2090) registered
victories over the good Reverned Bernard "King" Baker (1851), Chris "the
Babe" Mabe (1963) and Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (1982) to capture clear 1st
Place with 3-0
and pocket $100.
Equal 2nd-5th with 2-1
were NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2040), NM Leland "El-Jefe"
Fuerstman(2012),

Newton, Tapia Share Top Honors; Villone Wins Lower
Section of Pepperoni's II (Quick Ratings Tournament)
Charlotte,
NC 12-15-03: A cheerful crowd of 19
of the Metrolina area's hungriest pizza eating and beer drinking chessplayers
converged
upon Pepperoni's on Monday evening in order to participate in Pepperoni's
II.
This slightly less formal 3 round, G-29
event
was preceeded by a meeting whereby the "new"
CCC T-Shirts were
presented to various club Champions.
In the Top Section, the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitz"
Newton
(2004) dispatched of Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (1703), split the point with
co-winner, CCC Favorite Son Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (1517) and
finally defeated SC Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (1913). Tapia clobbered
Michael "Jackson" Kliber (1982), drew Newton and bested Gary "the
Nuisance" Newsom (1983) to each score 2.5-.5
and pocket $30.
