NEWS & VIEWS 2-5-04
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Wendy's LIII Begins
Charlotte,
NC 2-4-04: A lively
congregation of 40
chess disciples from the southern piedmont area and parts unknown journied
to this sacred temple of higher thinkers
more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:1 of
Wendy's
LIII.
In the Top Section, each now leading with 1-0,
Expert Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2079) who commutes from Columbia,
S.C., emerged victorious after a rather complex encounter with Expert Michael
"See You Are; See You Are You" Curcuru (2022),
NM John "Night-Train" Lane (2069) disembowelled the Sicilian
Defense of Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1997) and Chris "the
Babe" Mabe (1963) won on a technicality when at his 30th move, NM
Leland "El-Jefe" Fuerstman (2000) overstepped the time limit. (By that
time, I was also getting my butt kicked...). In addition, the CCC's
#1 player, NM Frankie "Blitzin" Newton (2246) was held to
a Draw by Tom "Terrific" Waymouth (2002)
as was NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2036) by Jon "Cigars"
Pietras
(1802) (See Game 0378) and
the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1851) by Danesh
"DD" Dadgar (1712). In the "B" Section, leading with 1-0,
Tarokh
"the
Oak" Taefi (1737) impaled Ken "the Terrible" Ivens (1744), "Iron"
Mike
Eberhardinger (1708) schooled Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1649),
Michael
"the Savage" Savage savagely beat down Viktor "the Mad Russian"
Ozherelyev (1632) and Jeremy "Irons" Davenport (1577) did
the cymbals thing to Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1607). In the "C" Section,
Spencer
"Jazzman" Singleton (1501) played taps for Kert "the Oracle" Edward
(1497), Laura "Karate Kid" Lee (1460) KO'ed Winfred "Guns"
Gatlin (1510) and Kevin Huang (1453) dusted Algie "Crumpler" Clyburn
(1500) to each lead with 1-0.
In the Lower Section, wins were turned in by: Lee
"R&Bman" Richardson, Sean "the Villain" Villone,
Shawn
"Penn" Claitt, Ervon "Wooden" Nichols,
Don
"Scott" Norwood, "John" Wayne Mayes and Tracy Davenport.
All
