Newton Topples Fuerstman; Millsaps Takes Middle; Clavijo Lower Section of  Wendy's XIV

A grand total of forty-six of the Metrolina area's most self proclaimed genii congregated, over the past five weeks, in our sacred temple of creative chess thinkers more commonly known as Wendy's in order to compete in Wendy's XIV. In the Top Section, leader NM Leland Fuerstman (2058) needing only a final round Draw to secure a share of the title, was unable to hold off the viscious attack of NM "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2193) who captured clear 1st Place with a score of 3.5-.5. Newton, who employed the Kopec System against Fuerstman's O'Kelly  (See Game 0118)  has now won, or shared 1st place in an unprecedented eight of the fourteen 5 round CCC tournaments which have taken place at Wendy's. Tied for 2nd-3rd, one-half point behind, were NM Leland Fuerstman (2058) and CCC favorite son 16 year old phenom expert Justin Daniel (2052). To view Daniel's Rd:5 encounter with David Jaap (1800)  (See Game 0117)  In the Middle Section, Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1572) rose to the occasion with a Rd:4 Draw against NM Daniel Liu (2000) and a nice final round win over Michael Curcuru (1805) to take clear 1st Place with 3.5-1.5. Equal 2nd-3rd were Slobodan Sinanovic (1495) and Darrell Spencer (1399) each with 2.5-2.5. In the Lower Section, Helton Clavijo (1271) scored a final round upset victory over fellow Latino David Roman (1349) to capture clear 1st Place with 4-1. Equal 2nd-3rd were DavidRoman and Sam Christopher (1052) each with 3-2. Other Rd:5 winners were: Randy Lovelace  (See Game 0116), Brandon Lee, Daryl "Flash" Gordon, Brandon Brown, Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla, Lester Mack, Nick Bambara, Adam Clontz and Robert Schifferle. Eighteen chess energumens (including 4 certified chessmasters) neglected mowing their lawns or even spending time with their families at the lake and instead chose to participate in an organized chess competition: Smokehouse IV. In the Top Section, recently crowned National Master "WWF" Frankie Newton II (2202) asked no quarter and yielded none as he scored a perfect 3-0  defeating NM Klaus Pohl (2222) (from Greenville, S.C.) in the ultimate round to take home $100 cash.  Clear 2nd Place was captured by a relentless NM Daniel Liu (2007) who scored 2.5-.5 winning $50 after a lively Rd:3 encounter with NM Leland Fuerstman (2053) which ended in the last minute of the sudden death time control. In the Lower Section, Darrell Spencer (1399) outdistanced the field with 2.5-.5 taking home $80.  Equal 2nd-3rd were Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1554) and Jim Ulaky (1100) each pocketing $20.
