Newton Wins Top; Eberhardinger,
Waddell "B"; Callahan "C"; Conard Wins $100
Bonus in Lower Section of Wendy XLV
Charlotte,
NC 5-28-03: A new
Wendy's record total of 68
players! from North and South Carolina
participated in Wendy's XLV. (Rd:5 saw 22
boards in action; 1 short of the record. We now have 136
current members ...long live the CCC!!) In
the Top Section, rebounding from a brief illness just in
the nick of time, the CCC's #1 player, current NC State Champion,
NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2309) squeezed out a R's&P's
ending versus soon to be Expert Chris "the Babe" Mabe (1995) to capture
his unprecedented 28th Wendy's Title! with 3.5-.5(and
his 5th in a row! Stop the maddness!!!) Meanwhile, Patrick "Flanker"
McCartney
(1925) handed Bobby "Duck" Waddell (1763) his first loss in 12 CCC encounters
(See Game 0301),
Michael
"the Lip" Lipkin (1712) upset(?) NM Leland "el-Moron" Fuerstman
(2011) and NM Daniel "Schlecter" Liu (2000) split the point
with
Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2044)(See
Game 0302). In the "B" Section,
even though he opted to "play up,"Bobby
"Duck" Waddell (1767) still had enough to share 1st-2nd Place
with "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1702) who drew with Slobodan
"the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1668) each scoring 3-2.
Meanwhile, Brandon "Bruce" Lee (1713) outmuscled Tarokh Taefi
(1724), Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1624) suppressed Daryl "Flash"
Gordon (1674) and Frank "Moo" Mu (1711) split the point with
"George C" Scott Baldwin (1768). In the "C" Section, though
he also opted to "play up," Chris "Dirty Harry" Callahan
(1572) upset
the good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1691) to take clear 1st Place
with 4.5-.5.
In addition, Michael "the Savage" Savage (1552) salvaged
a win versus "CEO" Mike Isner (1561), Kermon Joel Lane (1470) bested
Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1405), Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1532) played
a drum roll on Jesse "the Mind" Eddleman (1502) and Viktor "the
Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1591) manhandled 8 year old upstart Joshua
"Moo" Mu (1516). In the Lower Section, David
"Dipper"
Conard
(1275) defeated Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1395) to score a perfect
5-0
and take home a $100
bonus! Clear 2nd Place was Laura Lee (1148) with 3.5-1.5.

Moreira Takes Top Honors
(Again!); Matthew Smith 3-0
in Lower Section of Smokehouse XXXIX
Charlotte,
NC 5-17-03: Sixteen
travelling warriors from many origins participated in Smokehouse
XXXIX. In
the Top Section, NM Jairo Moreira (2367) dispatched
of James MacDougall (1786), yielded a Draw to NM Daniel "Schlecter"
Liu (2000) in Rd:2 (See Game
0299) and finally, survived a vicious
time scramble against Keith "Chuck" Eubanks (2060) to score 2.5-.5
and capture 1st Place for a record 4th consecutive time collecting
$100.
Equal 2nd-5th were NM Daniel Liu, Keith Eubanks
and the lowest rated player in the section, Bernard
"King" Baker (1679) who upset Patrick "Blanker" McCartney (1931)
and Drew with Tarokh Taefi (1724) and NM Daniel Liu (2000)! Each scored
2-1
and won $15.
In the Lower Section, Matthew Smith (1429) registered
wins against Richard "Gremlin" Tomlin (1314), Kermon Joel Lane (1487) and
Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1391) to score 3-0
and pocket $60.
Equal 2nd-3rd were Kermon Lane and Richard Tomlin
each with 2-1
winning $15.
