Takes Middle; Gatlin, J. Mu, Callahan Lower Section of Wendy's XXXIV Charlotte,
NC 5-1-02 : Once again,CCCattendance
records were smashed
in two categories as a grand total of 70
different
players participated in Wendy's XXXIV with 47
playing
in Rd:5. In the Top
Section, leader NM Leland "El-Presidente"
Fuerstman (2027) launched a lively attack against
NM Garrick H.G."Outlaw" Wells (2082) but overlooked the winning
move ultimately losing. (See Game 0221)
Because Expert Justin Daniel was a no-show (and a no-call), this allowed
the "Outlaw" to take clear 1st Place with 3.5-1.5.
Meanwhile,
NM Daniel "Schlecter"
Liu (2009) outflanked Patrick "Flanker"
McCartney (1918) but somehow the game ended in his 5th consecutive Draw?!
while the CCC's #1 player, NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2216)
yielded a Draw to Clarke "Superman" Brosi (1809). In the
Cruiserweight
Division,
Jon
"Cigars" Pietras (1789) split the point with Paul "Survivalist"
Lucas
(1600). In the M iddle
Section,
Slobodan "the Mad
Serb" Sinanovic (1716)
took an under the weather Deneil "Sean" Brazell (1615) to school to finish
clear 1st Place with 4-1. Also,
in the Middle Section, Frank Mu (1525) bested Daryl
"Flash" Gordon (1609), Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1617) short circuited
Nathan "TechDude" Eerenberg (1482), Danesh "the Mad Iranian" Dadgar
(1550) vanquished Bernard "Bman" Baker (1521), Jerome "Cookie Monster"
DeBell
(1654) survived against Viktor Ozherelyev (1500), Gregory "the Mad
Ukrainian" Bunich (1609) discharged Algie "Van" Clyburn (1590),
"CEO" Mike Isner (1638) broke even with Gennady Brazhnikov
(Unr)
and Michael "You Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup (1550) Drew
with Wallace Kleucker (1590). In the Lower Section,
the valiant attempt by the CCC's youngest member, 6 year old phenom JoshuaMu
(1044) to score a perfect 5-0 and win a $100 Bonus was thwarted by Winfred
"Guns" Gatlin (1297) who tied with Mu for
1st-3rd Place

$$500 Sunday Special I Begins Charlotte,
NC 5-5-02: Twenty-eight of the CCC's more competitive
members rubbed shoulders with a chess celebrity
as they participated in Rd:1 of Sunday Special I.
In the Top Section, International Grandmaster Julio Becerra
(2605) converted a N&P ending versus NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2009) (See
Game 0223) while NM Frankie "Blitz" Newton (2216) suffered
an upset at the hands of Patrick "Flanker" McCartney
(1923). (See Game 0227) In
addition, Harold Mouzon III (2195) bested Jeff Rayfield (1827),
Gary
"Player"
Newsom (2014) used Kryptonite on Clarke "Kent" Brosi (1809) and
NM Leland "El-Presidente" Fuerstman (2027) salvaged a Draw
against David "Kamikaze" Jaap (1832). In the Middle
Section,
Robert Moore (1700) caused the wheels to fall off of Randy Wheeless
(1474), Bernard "Bman" Baker
(1521) busted Paul "Survivalist"
Lucas (1607), Randy "I'm not Afraid of" Hight (1437) massacred
Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1417), Carl "Codes" McKern
(1586) contained Frank "Chessman" Johnson (1428),
