Curcuru Leads Top; Savage? "B"; PeBenito "C"; Lee Lower Section of Wendy's XLVII
Charlotte, NC 7-23-03: A reasonable turnout of 38 of the Metrolina area's most creative thinkers converged upon this factory of chess champions more commonly known as Wendy's in order to participate in Rd:3 of Wendy's XLVIIIn the Top Section, Michael "See You are; See You Are You" Curcuru (1876) outplayed Patrick "Flanker" McCartney (1931) to lead with 2.5-.5. Meanwhile, NM Leland "Boss" Fuerstman (2017) dispatched of Tarokh "the Oak" Taefi (1706) (See Game 0321) as NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) made peace with 2003 NC Scholastic Champion Daniel "Johnny" Tapia (2116) (See Game 0320). In the "B" Section, (Taefi chose to play up) "C" player Michael "the Savage" Savage (1549) who also played up, defeated Paul "Survivalist" Lucas (1676) to lead with 2.5-.5. In addition, the Good Reverend Bernard "King" Baker (1684) disabled the raygun of Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1658), Viktor "the Mad Ukrainian" Ozherelyev (1543) squeeked by Marnzell Hand (1600), Danesh "DD" Dadgar (1647) rolled up Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1561) and Frank "Moo" Mu (1718) split the point with Slobodan "the Mad Serb" Sinanovic (1706). In the "C" Section, Dino PeBenito (Unr) bested Brandon "Starr" Brown (1509) to lead with 3-0. Meanwhile, Ankit "Butch" Jivan (1431) beat down Winfred "Guns" Gatlin (1405) and Tim "the Chin" Chen (1412) K.O.'d Joshua "Moo" Mu (1516). In the Lower Section, Laura "Bruce" Lee (1286) karate chopped Darrell "Wilkes" Booth (1169) to lead with 3-0. Other Lower Section winners were: Sean Villone, Hassan Hashemloo, Robert Broadbent, William Dewbre, Jared Morse, Joe Shirlen and Tom Chen. All results may be viewed in "Current Crosstable."  Liu Defeats Bobby Fischer!? at LPO(See Game 0322)
Fuerstman, Curcuru Share Top Honors;  James, Ulaky, Suess, Hicks Lower Section of Smokehouse XLI
Charlotte, NC 7-19-03: Twenty-three competitors from at least 3 states journied to the Queen City and participated in Smokehouse XLI. In the Top Section, 2002 NC Hall of Fame inductee, current CCC Co-champion, NM Leland "Boss" Fuerstman (2017) dispatched of Jeremy Davenport (1698), Drew with NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) and finally defeated SC Expert Keith "Kevin" Eubanks (2062) (See Game 0319) to score 2.5-.5 and share =1st-2nd Place with Michael "See You Are; See You Are You" Curcuru (1876). Curcuru took out Michael "the Savage" Savage (1549), Drew with veteran Robert C. Moore (1700) (by the skin of his teeth, I might add) and defeated Patrick "Flunker" McCartney (1931) in the final round. Each pocketed $75. In the Lower Section, [USCF Non-Member] Adam "Jesse" James (1594), Jim "Sticks" Ulaky (1561), John "Dr" Suess (1539) and Tony "the Tiger" Hicks (1209) each scored 2.5-.5 and took home $37.50To view complete crosstable (Click Here) (Fuerstman directed) Next Smokehouse August 16.
